Cost of Living in Sydney?
 

A mate was asking about the cost of living in Sydney. I haven't lived there for about 15 years and haven't lived in Aus for near 10 years so wasn't able to be of much help.

Anyone here able to give a more up to date view on the cost of living in Sydney? What sought of salary is comfortable these days? What do you pay for a schooner/middy, bread, milk, petrol or a decent meal out these days?

They would ideally like to live within an hours drive of the airport (Kingsford Smith), I was guessing around Cronulla or that area as access to the coast is a plus, but wasn't able to give any idea on rent/buying for this area.

I'm not a drinker so I can't help with the cost of the grog. Never really taken note of the price of bread for some reason!?!? Milk is about 3.75 for 2L. Petrol down our way is about average for Sydney- 1.09-1.21 at the moment depending on the week. Tuesday arvo/ Wednesday morning is the end of the cheap cycle. Decent meal? That's the nice part of the shire in that there are a plethora of places where you can get away with two courses and wine (for two) for about $70 or you can go tonto and splurge and spend a couple of hundred. The closer to the water(Cronulla), the more you pay generally. We have some really fantastic Thai restaurants around the place (not quite as good as Newtown but stilll pretty good), some decent Indians, Italian, etc, etc. I can provide some recommendations if you like too! :}

Rents are still relatively cheap but that won't last with upward corrections being noted all over the place. Domain.com.au will be your best bet for that kind of information though. If you want to buy then a knock down job will set you back about $650K in Woolooware- and that'd be on a relatively busy street. A three bed town house is between $520K for a smaller one through to upwards of $780K for a bigger one. Again domain.com.au would be the best bet.

Commute to the airport is 30-40 minutes from most parts of shire. Add ten to fifteen minutes for Engadine, Heathcote, etc.

City anything up to $6!!!
Newtown $3.70-$4
Uni bars $3-3.50 or so


Or thereabouts.

Dont forget the cost of tolls when moving around syd!!! Nice and cheap!

Your biggest cost will be rent or mortgage. Back in 2001, I was paying $2200 per month for a nice 3 bedroom house in Greenwich. I can only imagine it would be more now.

In my experience of living in Sydney from 1998 til 2001 in Greenwich, and out of a suitcase from then on, Sydney's grocery and petrol prices are about the same as Melbourne's.

A comfortable salary in the Sydney area would be about $100k for a family, a little less for a single person who has simple tastes in cars (or who can do without one). I wouldn't want to live in Sydney on anything less than $60k - but many do and I feel sorry for them.

Not as expensive as i was expecting. I will email this thread to said mate and it will give him some more info than i was able to pass on, thanks again. When i left i think a schooner was about $1.10 or so at the local RSL and a couple of bucks in the pub so it has changed a bit. The house prices are a bit of an eye opener :eek:

No worries mate, house prices have skyrocketed the last few yrs!

Im also in Cronulla near the beach.

The price of a beer varies a little bit but generally at Northies Cronulla Hotel the price is $3.80 or there abouts, petrol today was 109.9, and Kingsford Smith is generally 25 - 40 mins depending on the time of day. Some very nice seafood restaurants near the water and Hooters Steakhouse is about to open here. Woohooooooo !!! Generally a very nice and safe spot, although no doubt you would have heard about the riots last year.........:hmm:

Is a 'Schooner' the same as a 'Pint' in Western oz? At that price I'm assuming so. A touch cheaper then here :(.

A schooner is 425ml, a pint 570ml from memory.

As for Northies, a schooner of an average beer (VB etc) is around the $3.80 mark, a pint of good beer (e.g. coopers pale, yum!) is more like $6 or $7!

Doesn't matter what beer you're drinking there, just kick back and enjoy the eye candy! :ok:

On another note, the price of a Big Mac is apparently a good start when comparing the cost of living...
