I'm guessing THAT is the definition of a 1-way strip!

Dixons Cider 5th Dec 2007 05:55

Corky

yea you are on the wrong side of the divide. The Hochstetter runs from the Grand Plateau down onto the Tasman glacier- I think . The place in question is a big flat area by the top of the fox ice fall called the "fox xxxx"
ahhhhh that triggered something - the Fox Neve.

PitterPatter 5th Dec 2007 06:39

Here's a couple more from the coast

PitterPatter 5th Dec 2007 08:24

ah, yes. There's nothing like it.
A great day on the coast is pretty spectacular. Need to get over there more often.
Chocolate fish for the locations:ok:

Dixons Cider 5th Dec 2007 10:16

that'll be the chocolate fish to you then Corky. 'fraid you boys are out of my league now!!
I know both Martins Bay and the Kaipo from above only, not as intimatly as you blokes.

As an aside, you blokes got me gee'd up and I had a poke about on google earth (amazing stuff), but saw quite big a strip thats not immediately obvious as to why its there. Its looks like its on a ridge somewhere between the head of the Pyke and what I think is the Gorge River. 44 12'30 S 168 18'33 E according to Google Earth.

Any ideas?

PitterPatter 5th Dec 2007 18:29

Nice. 3 outa 4 aint bad Corkey. :D
SIA yep, but not the Kaipo. Over the hill n up the river a bit....

Great thread!!

I have just trawled through the whole lot over the last week or so - fantastic photos. This may even rival the photos thread on rotorheads :p

Here are some of mine - Guess the locations

An easy one to start:

Should be very familiar to some of you:

A bit harder perhaps??

I don't know them very well, never been into the Kaipo, just overhead- seen heaps of pictures though. On that strip on google earth, I've seen that once before but never landed there, must just be another one from the venison recovery but I'll do some reasearch, Know a few people who will know.

Well if it aint the Kaipo then I'm buggered if I know.. Could almost be anywhere slightly flat and clear :} The only other place which springs to mind would be that biggish hut up the hollyford (can't remember the name). Just not sure... :E

Spag,

No 1 pic = Darwin

Or am I going completly crazy!!!

compressor stall 6th Dec 2007 02:21

That time of year again.

There is no cloud in this photo, it's the icecap at dusk. The a/c in the shot is about 6000 agl. It's a good example of why we do a lot of late night ops into the field - those crevasses would be invisible during bright sunshine.

spag 6th Dec 2007 02:42

ALLICEDUP - Your sanity is intact - Darwin indeed.

CS - Great shot. One of my aims is to do some flying down there one day

ABX 6th Dec 2007 03:02

Very nice shot Stallie, what was your height when you took the shot?

Where are you now mate, I thought you were back from the land of the midnight sun.

Cheers,:ok:

compressor stall 6th Dec 2007 04:11

We were at 9500, they were at 9000, terrain about 3000'; the pic is the lower east flank of Law Dome, east of Casey. I'm back here now for the next couple of months, it's an annual thing! :ok:

ABX 6th Dec 2007 04:38

Thanks Stallie, I wouldn't mind being your pax on some of those flights.:}

Nivo 6th Dec 2007 04:44

maybe up the Pyke?

ps. thats not the reason my last girlfriend left me by the way!!!

compressor stall 6th Dec 2007 05:30

I flew the toy down this year; as for the bus, keep an ear out in the next little bit. :8

:ok:

kiwiblue 6th Dec 2007 08:41

Corky: Kaipo not, Pyke not!

If you go into Harrisons Cove (ride the Elevator off NZMF) just carry straight on up the valley (instead of making the turn into the fjiord for the Footstool) you'll go straight over the Kaipo Wall and into the Kaipo Valley itself.

The strip you indicate in behind Awarua Point there (N side of Big Bay) looks to me to be more up towards Gorge River... not too familiar with that area though -we usually came down the E side of the Red Hills to the Olivine Ice Plateau into the Pyke (between Lakes Alabaster and Wilmot) before running the Kaipo Saddle (roughly 44 26'03.34 S 168 00'59.25 E) on the way to Yates Point/St Annes Point for the NZMF arrival.

Plenty of spots in the Pyke to put down if you really need to, a couple of old strips in that area too, but not easy to see on GE!

Hope that helps!

ABX 6th Dec 2007 09:04

Jetstar1,

Who says nothing grows in a salt lake? I've been told that the red colour is due to an algae that thrives in that salty environment... now all we gotta do is find a market for salty red algae!:}:ok:

Cheers,

Dixons Cider 6th Dec 2007 10:04

The same algae that makes a white flamingo go pink. :8

Jabawocky 6th Dec 2007 10:09

Would that be Esperence in WA?

J:ok:

Bevan666 6th Dec 2007 12:32

This one might be a tricky one. Taken in January 2005.

http://www.bja.com.au/ext/N058010.jpg

Any guesses?

spag 6th Dec 2007 19:36

Bevan 666 - is it Dili?

I thought number 2 from my photos would have been gotten quickly. Some clues - The runway threshold is at the far left of the photo in the centre ... It is not in Australia (any more) ... there is already a photo of the airfield on this thread from on the ground.

tipsy2 6th Dec 2007 20:51

spag, could it be Lae TPNG.

tipsy

kingtoad 6th Dec 2007 21:14

... I would have said Goroka rather than Lae.

185skywagon 6th Dec 2007 22:59

can remember getting an email showing the thing but not the name.

Kingtoad - Goroka it is, well done

Another view of Goroka:

Re Jetstar1's photo.

Shot of the Mulligan River, west of Glengyle, showing the red algae build-up as evaporation takes place. Similar to the lake photos above.
