OZ ATPL Distant Learning
 

Hi all.

I need to know if it is easy enough to study for and to do the Australian ATPL Law and Human Factors at the same time through distant learning. Or is it better to do them seperately.

I'd also like to know if any of the four 'harder' subjects are easy enough to do self study.

Yeeh, ATPL Air Law and Human Factors aren't too hard but it depends on your other work commitments. ATPL HF was a lot easier than CPL Human Factors beleive it or not, probably coz their written by different people. You should be ok with these two but don't forget Law has 80% pass mark. I recommend you get Nathan Higgins notes for study. You can completely forget about doing Flight Planning by correspondence unless your Einstein. You need to spend a solid 2 weks in class for this one as it is very intense and a lot to remember. I also recommend you go to class for Aerodynamics/Systems as a lot of people struggle with it. You may be able to do Nav & Performance & Loading self study but you would definitely benefit by going to class, you will learn a trick or two! Good luck with your exams. :)

I would suggest having a crack at Met, Law and HF and maybe Performance and Loading by distance. All the rest would be best done at a course. I see you are from NZ and I would suggest going to Advanced Flight Theory. A lot of Kiwis go there and they are an excellent crowd.

Does anyone know when the flight test requirement is going to come in?

I currently have all my NZ ATPL subjects but no longer have a turbo-prop job and I need to get my ATPL before I can move on too much further (I've got too many hours to be sitting around in GA) and the only way I can see of doing this is to get it (and hopefully a job) via Australia.

mate i did all but flight planning by correspondence, and it isnt too hard... just a bit of effort mate.

i dont think u need 2 be einstein 2 do flight plannin at home, just a lot more dedication and time. Can be done though.

I think it depends on the way you learn, i've self studied five now (all but the two killers) and have had no probs at all (ask me again after Sys/FP!). Human Factors and Air Law don't need to be done by correspondence/distance learning, just get a reference text for each. You don't need someone to tell you how to put a post-it note into your docs, and you can do them together for sure.

As for the flight test requirement, have a look here. By the looks of the discussion, we'll see Bob Brown as PM before you have to do an ATPL flight test :ok:

I did all the ATPL subjects using self-study just before the cyberexams came in. I didn't have any major difficulties, but I guess it depends how self-disciplined you can be...

I would guess that different people learn better in different ways, but the self-study option certainly worked for me!

I'm currently in NZ with very little $$$ and I'm trying to get some together to come over for one of the 6 week courses early next year + do some self study before and after the course.

Just wondering what the job market is like over the autumn/winter period and if it is any easier in the summer. Like most of you I will be looking for something with some form of turbine strapped on each side of it.

.....I guess from what others are saying it can be done.... but with kids, work, wife........perhaps if there was 32 hours in the day!
