How do you take all your photos!
 

Having only just got my first real GA job, a lot of people I've spoken to and past instructors have told me they've got one big regret for when they first started flying 'for real'. It's that they didn't take enough photos.

I want to start putting together a big fat digital photo album of all my experiences, the highs, and the lows (there is a pun for you), and to have something to look back on in years to come.

What I'm interested in is for the photographically inclined out there amongst you, is what camera do you use, and what sort of results does it yield. Are there some that are better than others? What are some of your favourite things to take shots of.

I'm really keen to hear some feedback, and maybe even a few posts of some favourite shots?!

I took a whole heap of photos while up North. But even then I was unable to explain the whole thing to the family and friends, you just had to be there. Took a lot of scenic photos to show where I had been, some of the more 'interesting' runways, Out stations are always worth a pick (no one will believe you otherwise), as well as all the great people you meet up there. Wont matter how many you take it will never be enough :( . Keep it in your nav bag for quick use, some photo moments last seconds but are priceless. I used a Cannon G6 PowerShot :ok: .

And don't forget the camera in your mobile phone, for those photos that won't wait for you to grab the REAL camera out of your bag! Sure, the photo quality might not be the same but, if faced with the choice of a low quality photo, or no photo at all, what are you going to do?:ok:

Hi,

While a small camera is great, I always carry one in the seat pocket. Give some thought to getting a small soild state video camera with an external mic socket.

You can then grab the sound as well.

My plan is to get a few clips to use as training aids for my tailwheel flying and aeros.

There is one guy I used to fly with who has all the good gear, and takes some absolutely fantastic photos. I think his PPRuNe handle is Jagermeister.

I use a very tiny Pentax Optio S6. Around $440 - $450 from most places such as JB HiFi etc. It's a great camera for flying because it's so small and the quality of the photos is excellent. You can carry it on your belt in a small case and not even know it's there. I use it when I see strange occurences and people doing stupid things, etc. Recently snapped a guy on his motorbike on the Hwy next to me in video mode. It does 640*480 video which is twice the size of most digitals. Lets just say that with the clarity of that video, he won't be doing that for a while after I passed it onto the appropriate "department."

I use a small compact rectangular Kodak LS743 4MP camera. Paid less than 300 bucks for it and it is a great little machine. I stick a 512Mb SD card in it which gives plenty of capacity for short video clips too. Have a collection of terrific photos from it - just a pity they are all on the computer at home. Might post a few on here sometime - some of the PNG lapuns may find a couple of recent pics from this land interesting. I stick the camera in a side pocket of my headset/flight bag which allows easy access in flight.

I must be old fashioned...still shooting slide film and scanning it. Mind you I just bought myself a Nikon D200. If I was going to go digital, it may as well be in style. :E

I used to use a neat little Olympus mui II 35mm compact camera. Nearly all the shots on my website are from it.
Now I use a Canon Ixus 40 that I won from an easyJet competition. It sits next to me and I use it during the tours. Very easy to use, robust and takes pretty good snaps.

You MUST get a camera. everyone I flew with keeps asking for copies of mine.

I picked up a great tripody thing yesterday for $25.
It is a very sturdy suction cap "pod" I'm going to fit my small video camera to, so it can sit out of the way in an uncluttered position in the cockpit and video past the pilot's ear out the windscreen, no hands.
It is universal video and still cameras can fit. Has a ball jount for adjusting the angle the camera sits, so either vertical or horizontal or in between if on a sloping face like window.
Plotting weather I might stick it on the wing tip for a short flight with a safety lanyard in case it lets go.
Could use the footage if it does start streaming in the breeze behind the wing for funniest home videos couldn't I.
I have a Nikon Pixma and it takes good photos and is pocket sized... Ya takin' photos through windscreens, so they aren't going to be too different to a real classy expensive chunky camera anyway.

The important thing is that it's relatively small and easy to use one handed. If you have a whopping great big SLR, great, but they're hard to use when you're trying to keep some sort of semblance of S+L flight happening...

A little digital will do in most situations.
