Big house wall Horn Island

I deeply regret to inform past and present members of the Torres Straits, that the big house signature wall was senselessly vandalised over the weekend by a certain nameless individual whilst members in the house lay asleep after a usual saturday night big house party. Luckily, a certain few worked tirelessly for the majority of the morning to redeem the messages of those that have done "straits" time before them and thankfully the majority of the messages were recovered in time. For those of you that missed out, the boys from up here are retrieving photo's to rebuild the messages on the wall - we are aware it will not be the same but hope that the tradition will live on.
We have photo's of the wall before and after but cuz were only bongo pilots don't know how to insert an image, so if anyone knows please help us out.

doh!

Strangely this wall / ceiling was the exact topic of conversation between myself and a copule other ex- Straits pilots over here in Europe this past weekend.

Can you mail me the pics to [email protected] and i'll see what we can do.

Was the vandal a pilot or a resident??

He should be lynched.
There are thousands of stories in each comment.

What exactly was the dammage?

Maybe you could move his belongings into the stinking toilet next to the laundry when he is at work or write all over his personnal belongings to express your fury.

A lot of memories in that big house for alot of us.

What a ****!!! Who was it? If it were not for the sheer hell of it, its the whole history factor involved.

Hope is was saved for that was not goof form at all. Hope the person is sumairly linched and given a brown drink on their way :)

As for the biys who are still in the straits I bit you a du' for it doesn'tlook like I will be returning with the red and whites to the straits. I wish you all the best wherever you may end up. Barrier house pool live on and go the big house wall.

Keep well and if you are ever over Broome way give the big fella a shout out.

The legacy of all the past bongo-clowns erased. Sad news. I hope the "Jimmy at f:mad:ked up northern" gets restored, that was an inspiration to us all! I have sent what photos I have and hope that it helps. Looks like the culprit has just condemmed himself to consant midnight teabag ops and getting his cell door in the house glued closed on every opportunity for the rest of his stay :E. STACKS ON! Ooga booga.

Good times.

Thai997 6th Jun 2006 03:39

Tell Gina that he likes her....... He will never feel safe in the straits again.

justdrinkit! 6th Jun 2006 22:51

I never post but this is the worst news i have heard in a long time and really p*&##$% me off!

What history, and stories have that been destroyed! This person obviously has no character and no idea of what it means to do straits time. Hope he understands what he has done and where the names on that wall are now. They might be interviewing him one day!

He doesnt deserve a brown drink!!

The wonderful big house wall

Having been a resident of HID in 2003 - 2004 and checking out with the honour of being allowed to write my piece on this wall of knowledge, I am disgusted that some low life scum crap would stoop so low as to vandalise this national treasure. And a resident of the house too boot!
Yeah, I agree, tell him Gina wants him, and whilst at it, tell him(I presume not her), that the rest of us have him in our sights.
What an idiot.
Proudly, my brown drink picture survived awhile on the first fridge to the left in the door, to stand testiment to this wonderful tradition.
I hope the only brown drink this guy gets is a full jar of vegemite mixed in HID sewer water.
Good on the rest of you fellas for trying to keep the tradition secure, all the best, from one of the kelpies in the sky.;)

bullamakanka 7th Jun 2006 07:24

Anyone know the gentlemans initials who carried out this act??

localQNH 7th Jun 2006 18:37

Disgusting ! That guy should be locked up in the dungeon for a week ,turn the aircon off and feed him with rotten fish from the HID wharf.
When he is finsished he will get a Boigu Base for at least 3 years.

A lot of memories in that big house for alot of us.

:(

I am completely dumbfounded that anyone from 'the big house' could treat years of tradition, not to mention blood, sweat and vomit with such disrespect. What a spanner.
I hope you guys deliver some appropriate justice. Like HID-BAM-HID in CSU for a month.
I have some pretty good photos of that wall so let me know if you need more detail.
Gordstar, I know that photo of your farewell very well indeed. It stared at me from that fridge for months. Classy.

Ooga Booga,

PP.

THE Horn Island wall of rememberance

Hey Pigprodder, thanks for that mate, I wonderred how long it lasted there.
I hear that things at Wasaga are a bit quieter these days, hopefully that will change soon as crews once again get to know each other better.
Long live the fires on the front "lawn", the socialising, the informal uses of the big room in the big house, and all the other crazy stuff we did.
As for the reason why we are all in this forum, can anyone let us know what punishment the low life has recieved?
I suggest, as part of his reward, one month, HID-Murray Is-HID in CSU or HPL.
Cheers, oh and Pigprodder, I never got a photo of the wall, how can I get one from you please???

Painting Over History

After several phonecalls and emails I have found out some ****** thought it would be better off for them to paint over a wall which holds years of history. This new pilot ( Stick), who had just started with the company, woke up early one morning whilst the other people were sleeping and painted over all the memorable messages. Who does this guy think he is??

When you arrive on a place like Horn and see the wall with pilots messages who have come done there time and gone, you feel satisfaction that your time there is noticed. Over the next 12months or so you wonder what message to leave behind for the next era of pilots in the hope the message will be there in 12months time.

But when a new guy who just starts with a company finds it in himself not to ring management, or ask the senior base, or even ask any other line pilots how they would feel if the memory wall was painted over. Then you ask yourself, what else will he think is appropriate.

I hope the guys on Horn deal with this  head. If he writes on the wall after he does his time, make sure you let him. And after he leaves the island, feel free to leave inspiring messages next to his name for future pilots to read.

Thanks to the guys up there for passing on the messages and trying your best to recover the wall back to it's state. :D :D :D :D

Maybe the new pilot can do this to the wall instead :ugh: ...........

Better result maybe????

zooropa 12th Jun 2006 07:29

I don't believe I could say it any better than stopwhining12, thanks for that post mate. You must have done it hard up there like we all did. But still, I'll put in my 50 cents worth.

What this fella did shows nothing but lack of respect for the hard work put in up there, and a total lack of respect for the friendships that were made, not only between fellow pilot's, but other people working in the Straits (ie School teachers and former nurses were known to have signed the wall after a Big House drink-up). Alot of these messages (including mine) thanked the people they worked beside. Some even mentioned a good mate of ours who was killed the the Lockhart crash. Wonder if this prick even read the messages before painting over them? It just made my blood boil when I heard this news.

stopwhining12 put it right. You would spend countless nights on the booze at the big house (probably with nuts out) reading over former pilot's messages, and would wonder what you would write when your time to escape that hell-hole came.

To the criminal himself, what you have done was NEVER EVER EVER called for. I'm not sure of your aviation background, but word spreads like bushfire in General Aviation. I know this because when I heard the news, I immediatly text all pilot's who had written on that wall. Let us just say you are not winning any votes with us.

Now to the salvage mission. A firm handshake to those boys who went into repair mode. You boys will certainly recieve a shout (or brown drink if you please) from me when ever I see you next. You boys are champions, and we all sincerely thank you.

And another shout-out to the criminal at hand.....Any thoughts on your farewell message? Sure it won't be on the wall for long....................
