Air NZ LHR - AUK (where did LAX go!!)
 

Just a quick one.

Booked flights from Dublin eventually ending up in Dunedin Sept 29th.

The tickets I have include a LHR-AUK flight. Last time I had a LHR-LAX ticket and then a LAX-AUK as there was a 4 hour stop-over.

Now it seems that it's a touch-down and off again at LAX.

So what's the deal? Will I be sitting on the runway for an hour or so literally sitting on the 744 or will I be made get off and re-check luggage??

I'm just confused as it's different to last time.

Calling Air NZ is not a problem I just thought someone here might know.

Reguardless of where you are going, when you go through LAX you have to go through customs get your bags then check them in again prior to been processed for departure.

This prob dosen't help much but thats how it is

I rang ANZ at about 5.30 this morning and after about 5 mins on hold got through to a someone!!

She said it was a sit on the plane for 2 hours job in LAX so I asked why it was different to last time when I had a 4 hour stop in LAX.

She went off and checked and then said no you'll have to get off and recheck everything (this is what I had to do last time).

My only concern now is I have no ticket from LA to Auckland - I do have one from London to Auckland.

Last time I flew I had one from London to LA and then LA to Auckland so I'm still as much in the dark.

Travel agent don't seem to know either. I guess if you hear of someone forcing their way onto a ANZ 744 departing LAX in Sept you'll know who it is.

Mark, you'll probably have to clear the transit lounge but if you're ticketed from LHR-AKL then your bags are going to go all the way through- you shouldn't need to re-check them.

Most airlines these days don't allow the transit passengers to stay on board and make everyone get off. This DOES require you to be re-screened as no one trusts anyone elses screening. That happens in all Aussie ports and every international port I've flown into (HKG, FRA, LHR, FCO, SIN, BKK, LAX, AKL, etc, etc)

So, I think it's a terminoloogy thing. My suspicion is that you will only have to take your transit stuff off and go through security again in LAX and your bags will stay nicely downstairs.

Last time I had to take the bags off at LAX and again at AKL but DUB - LAX I didn't have to see them but as I said I had a ticket and waited in the small terminal in LAX with the Route 66 bar and BK etc.

Maybe you're right Keg...who knows!! Would be nice to leave the bags on the plane though as you say.

I was on the ANZ flight from Heathrow to Auckland and back
last year (flights NZ1 and NZ2)

As Keg has said, at that time, you did indeed get off the aircraft
at LAX, however you did not have to bother with collecting your
luggage.

After getting off the aircraft, you are directed to a transit
area (separate from the rest of the airport, you can't go
duty-free shopping or similar). You first go through the usual
immigration stuff (passport, form, fingerprints, etc), and then
everyone ends up in a transit lounge. Once the aircraft is
ready to go, you get back on the aircraft and continue to
Auckland.

Any idea how long you were waiting around in LA for Hep?

That sounds like what I'll be doing so.

In April/May when I did it I could have effectively left the airport and come back a few hours later and I was in one of the terminals but the transit room sounds different.

I am flying on a Thurs this time, last time was a Friday so maybe that is a factor.

You're correct Hep, you go into the transit lounge for 1 1/2 hours but your bags stay on the AC so no need to recheck them. FAA rules in the US state that passangers have to leave the AC whilst it's refuelled .

If you buy a ticket with Lauda Air/Austrian Airlines from Vienna to Sydney you only get ONE ticket stating VIE-SYD although you stop in Kuala Lumpur for about 90 minutes or so. It also got the same flight number (OS1)...
