Are there any hopes for me?

Hi guys

I obtained an Aus CPL and have 156hr total time of which 30hr was done on a c206 (300 Max HP). Where do you guys in the know think I should go looking for my first job?

I'm currently visiting Cairns but obviously the standard is way too high for me to get any chance out here. I'll be driving down to Tully/Mission Beach to see some meatbombing operators next week...

I am more than willing to work for nothing

Cheers :D

I am more than willing to work for nothing
Any hope for you? NO, not if you make statements like this.

DON'T Pay for a job...If you want to pay to fly, rent yourself a plane and go flying.

As for places to go, try Darwin, Kununurra and Kakadu.

Cheers, HH.

:ok:

Hey Ellsworth

firstly, I'm assuming that isn't a wind-up.

With this being the case I'll impart a small bit of forum wisdom for your benefit.

Never ever ever ever ever ever ever write/say/ think out loud the following phrase........

I am more than willing to work for nothing.
Your CPL didn't cost 'nothing', so why offer to work for 'nothing?'

psycho joe 4th Jun 2005 11:54

I am more than willing to work for nothing
So why get a CPL licence if you don't intend to fly for a living???

So do you intend to bring this fantastic news to the attention of the airlines??...or do you just intend to F:mad: ck it up for the other people in GA who don't live off mummy and daddy???

Boney 5th Jun 2005 00:55

More than willing to work for free? 5-10 years from now you may be in Jetstar whinging that the QF drivers get paid so much more.

But don't whinge 'cause you would have done your part to help aviation wages in this country continue to go down.

How quickly they forget?

Besides, with your 30hrs. 206, you will be of some value out there - you don't need to market yourself as a cheap whore so why do it?

Continental-520 5th Jun 2005 01:55

Nuthin'

Although,

The reality is that when you do get your first job, you'll be flying/working for next to nothing.

NW WA is worth a try for sure, as proclaimed above, but you'll have to move there to get the gig, and you may find you have to wait around for a few months, depending.

Good luck mate. Keep trying. It's worth it.

Thanks for your posts guys, much appreciated

I had a further read on forums and I realise now that flying for nothing won't do any good to the industry - and i certainly don't support the movement.

I do wish to fly big boys toys some day but at the same time I do realise it's not an easy thing. What I meant by working for nothing is that IF NECESSARY I will be very happy to participate myself in the industry with next to no pay as long as I have a stable income from another job. I just get the impression that that wouldn't be so bad at least until I get my first 500hr or so.

And, as many of you guys are I am BROKE AS. But to me $ is just a need of life where flying is a passion of life. Who wouldn't want to make a living going fishin'?!

I'm sorry if I stirred a sense of anger amongst you guys, I really am.

I'll definately try Kununurra as suggested after visiting a few more places in QLD. Any other comments/suggestions?

Condensation 5th Jun 2005 03:52

Ellsworth, are you travelling around to different towns by car or flying?

R555C 5th Jun 2005 11:47

I get sick of listening to the crap that GA operators go on with and to some extent what us pilots complain about. If any of there GA operators, in KU and infact anywhere in AUST operated there buninesses properly like any other industry, there would be less quarrals about pay, and we could all make a living. Instead we persist with out of date aircraft with high maintanance costs, un-profesional managment, and just general crap.

For example I think then two operators at KU could be crushed by a fleet of mabey 3 or 4 caravans or mabey more (Some comfort for the pax) (Value for money). reducing maintenance and running costs. if you do the sums it works, pilots could get paid more, and you could still put low hour guys in command. a PW turbine is easier to run that a continental big block.

I have done the sums and it works, i think we as pilots need to take command of our own future and do somethinbg for ourselves. Forget these old idiots that attempt to run aviation organisations, and have gold braid and 20 gold bars. Lets get out there and show them how it should be done.

Towering Q 5th Jun 2005 15:55

How then would the punters aquire their magical multi command time?

Condensation....I think Mr Ellsworth uses a pair of roller blades.

Rabbit 1 5th Jun 2005 16:29

Toys for boys?

In any event, and as a comparison I earn't more $ cleaning GA aircraft with my PPL then I did with my CPL working like a dog flying 206's. That was 20 yrs ago.

Clearly not much as changed.

maxgrad 5th Jun 2005 23:21

Seems to be alot of anskt about GA. Some here sound so jacked off with the whole thing.....why stay?
The ones in it know the pays crap, conditions suck, you get stepped on from above and below, the machinery often is second rate, you get to live in places your pet dog would shy at. The ones trying to get into it either find out from those within or experience the proof themselves.

Why are there so many that are prepared to go through this mill?
we love flying! We want to get to a better situation!(fools dream?)

So for those who keep carrying on about it, get the f*kc out of the industry so those that are prepared to go the yards have the oportunity.

ok I feel better know

Chadzat 6th Jun 2005 02:45

Seriously R555C where do you think the operators will find the money to miraculously buy brand new aircraft. Sure there is money to be saved by having newer machinery but the acquisition costs would be prohibitive.

"Running their business properly" also gets back to money, I am in no way defending them but it all gets back to supply and demand. If they were to pay their pilots top dollar and buy brand new aircraft how many passengers would be going for joyflights at $1000 an hour!?

Anyway, back on topic. As I will be doing this exact same path in a year Ellsworth I am keen to see how you go.

Ellsworth 6th Jun 2005 02:48

Condensation, I'm now planning to get to Tully by bus from there whatever transport there is to get around. I DID consider roller blades but then Mission Beach would pose a few issues.

I've alread got a job (non-aviation) here in Cairns so I just need to save up a few more buck to move on. It's a real character building job I can tell you...

Frickman 6th Jun 2005 03:38

R555C

I totally agree with your line of thought, But Caravans as well as Otters have been tried before in KNX.

When I was up that way a C310 charter would go for $1000 /hr and yet new pilot's were paid as little as $18000/yr. I seriously considered starting up an operation in the old Kingfisher hangar, Which was nearly new and cost less to rent than a small house in KNX.

Schlongair tried vans years ago, It's a great idea during the dry season for tourists, but during the wet season a lot of charter and contract work is in light singles and twins. So the vans spent a lot of time on the ground unless they could be cross hired somewhere else.

Another problem would be what to do on days when only 2 tourists front up for a flight, You couldn't turn away pre-paid ticket holders or you destroy any word of mouth good will, so you'd have to suffer a loss.

R555C 6th Jun 2005 21:45

I agree with you there. Obviously there is a requirment to have an amount of fleet diversity. The idea would be to keep the caravans in the air as much as possible, easy during the dry, but rather dificult during the wet. so one would have to search around and try and pick up some freight or some other contracts elsewhere during that time. Surly it would be possible to run the aircraft compeditivly against the oposition.

As for chaging $1000/hr, thats fine if you get bums on seats. fill the caravan up and your making money at $115 per hour per seat, in aircrnditioned comfort, with more room, and in something that isnt 30 years old. I think the pax would be atracted to a larger aircraft, and greater comfort.

Back to this no pay for work crap-HH is right, the minute you say u will work for free its all starting to go downhill and its this same attitude that leads smart ar$e's like qantas to ask u to pay for your dash 8 ticket. As far as i know it is pretty much illegal for any business to ask u to work for free and what really $hits me is that its the ones who are making good profit (skydive operators)that are the main offenders!Bout 7 years ago i worked at a gas station as a drive way attendent/console operator and the dirty ba#$tard who owned it demanded that u work your first week for free .a year later he was caught and had to pay back everyones wages that he'd made work for nothing. How the hell is flying any different?- because theres always plenty of silly buggers out there willing to sell their soul to the devil and do it for free. Hope u have plenty of money put aside for that dash 8/737 endorsement!

centurionII 7th Jun 2005 07:29

Topic aside, some of you blokes really need to work on your spelling! If youre going to put a post up and be taken seriously about it, at least take the time to put it across correctly! I may sound like im being a picky p.rick but a potentially good post can fall apart from piss poor comprehension! Makes me wonder how some of you blokes got through your theory exams! examples.... " I feel better know" "Buninesses" "Un-profesional" and the worst one...mabey (twice!). :yuk:

maxgrad 7th Jun 2005 08:56

CII
Aren't you supposed to say all that in red ink?
I see what you are saying but it is mainly a forum not an English test.

Fly for free?
Jam that one u* you* a**e!

Towering Q 8th Jun 2005 12:40

C2...I hope "youre" and "im" were just typos.:p
