Antonov AN-2

I noticed that there are some cheap AN-2's for sale and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this plane and whether it was worth looking at.

I am looking for a General Tourer for me, my family and friends so it won't be a worker and will only be used as a weekend warrior to head up to the Whitsundays or down to the Snow etc.

I know it is supposed to be rugged and a bit slow but is there anything else about the airplane, good or bad, that you are aware of? I can't find any reviews or general information anywhere.

Thanks.

Gidday notmyC150v2,

Now you do realise that the AN-2 can carry 14 people or 1500kg of payload?
You must have a big family and a lot of friends....

Anyway you might be able to find some info or at least some contacts. Here

Happy Flying and Cheers, HH.

:ok:

PS: I'd love to come for a fly!!;)

If your interested have a chat to Barry Hempel at Archerfield, he has owned one for years now, has the only one AFAIK in Australia. 1000HP Russian radial, had the pleasure of a ride in it years ago, not the smoothest machine to ride in, but a bit of an adventure, basically took off across the cross runway at Marchooydore in a stiff breeze, performance of it is amazing.

Thanks for the Info. That website is great. Yes I do know it carries about 12 people but with four family and four friends their should be room left for a bar (a good one).

I will give Barry a call to arrange a looksee.

Thanks again for the help.

Now a flying bar, why did'nt I think of that one?
Hope the wife and kids fly too then!!

Cheers, HH.

CASA doesn't recognise the the aircrafts certificate of airworthiness. You would have to fly it under a special permit and as such would have to nominate which airfield you will operate from. You are only allowed to operate at said airfield and cannot land elsewhere.

If you can find an ex military AN2 you could operate it under the warbird cat and therefore you could operate warbird flight for fare paying pax.

Unfortunately as a private aircraft it is not viable.:{

Following on what tric said ... this might be worth a read http://www.caa.co.uk/srg/airworthine...2855000000.pdf

If you can see if an AN2 has a certificate of airworthiness in Canada, USA, UK, France, or Germany, CASA should automatically accept that CoA, means you would have to register it in one of those coutries before importing, but its one way to make it fit into the system.

Damnation

Thanks tric and swh.

I can see that this is going to take a bit of extra research.

I thought there would have to be a catch to the $140,000 price tag I saw on the ad.:suspect: :suspect:

It's a shame cos it looks kinda cute in an incredibly ugly kind of way...

You might be in luck, had a look at the LBA (German version of the CASA) they do have a Type certificate Data Sheet for the AN2 TCDS-No. 2069 Antonov An-2 PZL-MIELEC (Polen) An-2 / An-2T 8 (3/00), would need to see if CASA would then issue a CofA on the basis of the LBA TCDS.

If they will, the aircraft would need to registered in Germany first, or buy one of the ones already registered there, and export it to Australia.

One other little problem no one mentioned..... engineering. It is extremely hard to find people who can sign out the engine, over 1000hp group 21 category. Make sure you have that sorted and that the engineer isn't approaching 80 yrs old!! Also, how does 250ltrs fuel/hr grab you? (for 100nm)

Personally if money was no object I'd get a PBY5a Catalina...imagine that with a bar by the rear gun blisters and big comfy chairs to watch the scenery roll by:ok:

I have flown the AN 2 in the Ukraine (endoresement and one flight). She is rough and noisy but a good workhorse. However, I would not buy one for private purposes, not at these fuel prices.
