QANTAS 767 engines
My mate was watching a QANTAS 767 take off from Christcurch recently and wanted to know what was the highly distinctive whine that follows the depature of this said aircraft.( I know its more than the engine noise coz hes smart enough to regognise that) so im just wondering is this 'whine' a part of the aircraft design or is it part of the enginge and if so which brand of engine do the 767's have?
Many thanks Lindstrim |
they have all three engine types

The whine noise is usually produced by the front fan, so different fan designs have different noises. There are three engine types on the QF 767 fleet, so you might notice three different noises.

From memory, they are RR, GE and P&W. I stand to be corrected.

Had they possibly left one of the drivers behind ?

Qantas mostly uses the CF6 powered 767s on Tasman services. On some services, Rolls Royce powered versions (mostly seen on Aussie domestic services) are used.
I'm not sure about the "whine" bit though. Had your mate mentioned a sound like a backyard cement mixer then I could have told you the aircraft was a 767-200 with P&W engines. :} |
Haven't ever heard that a 767 makes a whining noise. However, I have heard that Airbus engines sound like a vacuum cleaner  (I'm not starting an Airbus vs. Boeing war)
