Qantas ditching at Perth

Now, I'm not trying to dredge up any muck or anything here guys, but I just heard a story that some time ago, a QF flight was inbound to Perth, which was socked in, and for some reason the crew decided the next course of action was to ditch...this was until a paxing Capt wanted to get the low-down, and suggested an autoland....

Can anyone point me in the direction of a BASI report or anything....just make interesting reading with regard to the Human Factors side of things..

thanks in advance

What all good news stories are made of...."Passenger talks pilot out of crashing...and saves the day!"

I have also heard the same story, but I thought it was an urban myth. Pretty much as you described, in a 767, and the paxing captain became disturbed when Flight attendants started getting life rafts ready! He asked to go to the cockpit, and suggested that the crew use all of the Auto-pilots.

Would be interesting to know if there are any facts behind this one.:ok:

Possibly a 74 classic in the eighties from Harare.

Not sure of the dates or specifics but as I understand it.

Perth was fogged in, Learmonth was an option for a while but crew continued to YPPH and PSD on YPLM was passed...... etc..... etc..

Oh yes, sounds very credible..........getting the liferafts ready. Would they be the same liferafts that are actually the escape slide?
How DO you get those rascals ready in flight?

just a guess...

but did you hear this story while on an ATPL course?

now you've all worked out how its done.

it's not the pilots skill that does it....... it's the passenger that suggests autoland.

If only I'd remembered that on my last sim ride.

and speaking of sim rides, is that not where (as opposed to "how") this whole story started?

Cheers

And if you ever need a quid, try the media.
With an attention grabbing (and grossly misleading) headline like that you would walk in!
The same question could have been asked without the bull**** title.

I heard both pilots were ex-QF cadets :p :p

Not even the most useless captain at Virgin would contemplate something like this.

A QANTAS airplane has ditched, but it was many years ago and in another country.

Jungmeister 9th Mar 2004 19:12

Autoland

I know it doesn't fit many of the criteria for this rumour but there was an autoland incident at Adelaide in August 2000. The aircraft was an ANSETT A320 VH-HYO caught in a fog with no alternate fuel.

The report is on the ATSB site at
www.atsb.gov.au/aviation/occurs/occurs_detail.cfm?ID=110

Learmonth by chance?

You're getting confused with an old story about a classic that ended up in Learmonth.

Not sure where departure point was aircraft was inbound to perth on a final command check. Perth went u/s on zero notice so aircraft headed to LM. Forecast was OK but after they went around at least once (and probably twice) due to the crappy weather that was actually at LM, skipper decided to let down heading west until he broke visual about 500' and came on back and landed at LM.

From the version of events that I recall, ditching never got a mention and the F/As certainly didn't 'prepare liferafts'- but woftam has already covered that! ;)

The skipper passed his command check though! :ok:

I'll see if I can track the story down again.

Sounds more like Calamity's runway lights drama where ditching was mentioned as an option.

Cheers :)

I have been told the same story by a QF pilot who swears it to be true. I am thinking more along the urban myth lines myself. The version I was told said the training captain came up after a PA was made saying that there was unforecasted fog at PH and that they will have to ditch. In the story I was told it was a 767.

Gday all,

I too remember this event and believe it to be true. I have seen a video re-enactment, which I am sure was produced by QF, shown during a CRM course.

From memory the PIC comes back from a crew rest after passing Learmonth and PH has socked in, comments to crew on duty something about them putting him the ****e well and truly!

I will try to track down some info on the video I saw when I go back to work next.

Cheers,
I'm gone!
