Pilot killed in light plane crash
A female pilot killed when a light plane plunged into the front yard of a south-western Sydney home had been performing aerobatics before the crash.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang, followed by what they believed was the engine cutting out, before the aircraft plummeted nose-first into the ground.
Nearby residents rushed to the crash site in Ellis Lane, Camden about 10.40am (AEST) where it is believed they found the pilot barely alive.
Two women first on the scene tried to help the woman and were later taken to Camden Hospital suffering shock.
Police said the pilot, aged in her late 50s, died before ambulance paramedics arrived.
A police spokeswoman said the aircraft had been climbing and heading across the Nepean River after completing a circuit when the engine stopped.
It then rolled on its side and nose-dived to the ground, crumpling on impact.
Camden Inspector Lynice Lording said the pilot, who had about 10 years flying experience, had set out from Camden airport for an hour of aerobatic and circuit flying.
She had only five minutes left of the flight when the Victa Airtourer plunged to the ground.
The woman, whose name has not been released, hired the two-seater plane from Camden-based Curtis Aviation, which leases the aircraft.
Passerby Karl Lehmer described hearing a loud bang before discovering the wreckage in the yard of a home owned by school teachers who were at work at the time.
Mr Lehmer said he was one of many locals who rushed to the woman's side, but although he checked for a pulse it was obvious there was nothing anybody could do.
Another witness, Kylie Bentham, said residents often became nervous about light planes overhead.
"I heard this plane taking off and landing and taking off and landing, which is what we call touch-and-gos," Ms Bentham said.
"I heard what sounded like the engine cutting out and I looked up for the plane, we get very paranoid around here when engines cut on planes.
"I saw it nose-dive straight into the ground."
It is the second fatal air crash near Camden airport this year.
A 67-year-old man died in February after a small plane crashed and burst into flames in a paddock near the airport.
Just hours after the fatal crash, another pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in the same region of south-western Sydney.
A police spokeswoman said a Catalina plane made a forced landing in a paddock in Montepellier Drive, The Oaks after its landing gear failed.
The male pilot was not injured.
Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigators would attempt to establish the cause of the fatal accident.
