I have a hard time believing that any employer could give a rats @ss about which university you went to let alone high school. See my unsw etc debate. If you think for a minute that high school debating might be the straw that breaks the camels back in getting you a job, I'd say the employer doesn't have enough resumes on his desk.

xkred27 - The only way to stand out is to present yourself as a sharp go-getter with Resume' in hand. This includes ironing a shirt and pants and a firm hand shake with eye contact. Show that you have initiative and that you are willing to work hard. The only info CP's are looking for on a resume is the minimums for that company and perhaps some time on type. The fact that you might be a trophy winning scrabble player is an outstanding achievement that you should be proud of. However do not get this confused with the fickle intricacies of employment in GA. Best of luck.

I recall receiving an application and resume (around 1987) in one of those neat black plastic folders. On opening, the first page was a Playboy centrefold captioned "Now I have your attention, please read on."

The guy got the flying job!

Fair call everybody... I'll wear that.
But it gives you an idea of how a CV can be blown out with a little bit of cr@p.... Meaningless in the end.

I've got friends from both private and state schools, and it's obvious really - it doesn't matter where you went to school to learn to be a tosser.

Just a thought to those involved in the earlier "education" scrap.

Have either of you looked at the university drop out rates...and then profiled those as to whether they went to Public or Private schools?

The answer is eye opening.

Most professional recruiters like to see a brief outline in bullet point form of your experience and skills plus an equally short comment on why you think you can do the job. Two pages at the very most. Then attach a more detailed outline of your current & past positions, maybe 2 to 4 pages. Only include what they need to know.

A LOT of poor information being posted here. Anyone reading some of this drivel would be well advised to seek some good books on job application. Need to do your research as 95% of the books for sale on this subject are garbage. Firstly, a 'CV' is a big tug, baggage from the British empire. A Resume should be ONLY 1 page on a plain white or cream quality paper. There are several different formats depending on what you want to highlight, hide, etc. Accompany it with a cover letter explaining who you are, what job you want and what you can do for them. Then follow up by phone/in person. So that is 2 pages total. The Resume is just a means to an end, an interview. This information is provided to yous all by someone who has made it to the top in several areas.

Agree Winstun, 1 page, keep it simple

Dont use wedding photos on a resume and don't list WWF Wrestling as a " Hobbies \ Interest".

Agreed in part; BUT:

I am an employer. If I ask for a Resume, that's what I want - one-two pages, addressing the position description. If I ask for a CV, that's what I want - 10-whatever pages; I WANT to see everything you have to offer. When I said my (current) CV is 30 pages, I meant it - and those who ask for it EXPECT to see everything in it.

The resume is the key to the door; the CV and interview is the passport to the position. Look at what is asked for and comply.

(Dog, I felt some of your stuff previous was a bit tetchy; but fair dinkum the 'Latin Lesson' cracked me up ......took me back to the (good?) old days of the (un)Christian Brothers College )

Once again, my apologies for letting my lower class schooling get the better of me (might have had something to do with a good friends funeral, a shocking mood, and thoughts of my own mortallity).



The best resume is the one that arrives when you need it, and says what you want to hear.

What I have to offer you is: a reality check. Snap out of it. Never heard anything so ridiculous in my life, wanting a 10 page CV, etc. If you really are an employer, you are pulling your chain in a big way. Not only a very sad person, but a poor reflection of your company, the aviation industry, and modern business etiquette in general. I would be interested to know the NUMBER of employees in your organization (if you have any..... ). Is it employer or frustrated government middle management recruiter?

Winstun ol' boy, you really need to loosen up.....perhaps a microlax for you?

My process works for me, so I freely offer that insight to anyone who cares to take it on board and use what ever part of it they see fit.

Middle manager? Yes actually; but far from frustrated, and the company currently has about 2000 staff who all 'got a guernsey' courtesy of the process I described. The Resume is the key to the door, the CV and interview are the passport to the job.

Think my advice sux? Fine, feel free to ignore it; but given as you know me not, see if you can extend yourself to NOT undertaking gratuitous personal attacks, OK?

To louis the fly..... I apologize. I was in an argumentative mood.
I really have no problem with public schools. Actually I had more friends from the public system even though I went to GPS.

Someone stated about uni. dropouts fro GPS schools. I agree. GPS only works if you know how to use it and know your place in the food chain.

Agree about resumes that are 30 pages. But adding a few lines of achievments you are proud of doesn't take alot of time away from the employer to read.

Like was also stated. FO on a chieftain...(shows lack of understanding of the regs.) this is more of waste of space than being on the debating team.

Are you seriously stating 2000 people in your Queensland GA charter operation were required to produce a 10 page CV style document at the interview to secure employment? I can only feel nauseated imagining the sort of drivel dressing the pages of your 30 page CV. I would like to assure the aspiring applicant that this guy is a once off (we hope).
Kaptin, before you seemed astoniished by my 5 ATPLs. I am typed on several biz and airline jets, have 2 degrees, and many other certificates and achievements. And it all fits on 1 PAGE.....

Your impressive resume would certainly raise some initial interest in a potential employer.

But if your more detailed CV is written in the style you have displayed in these posts, it would give that employer significant cause for concern.

I'm with jamair on this.

A good resume will get you to the door but I'd want more information before structuring an interview. The CV provides this.

(But I'm only a CEO in a non-aviation business, so what would I know.)
