Haha, normally I’d agree with you. If you can avoid dealing with the ATO, do. PITA, and treat you as a criminal until you prove otherwise….

Id claim them, I came from a Trade background and all you have to do when audited is be able to explain why you needed them for your work (I know as ive been audited more than once)
One of the years I had purchased really nice dress shoes, Claimed them on Tax, was audited and I showed how the company has work functions (at places like crown, etihad etc) and we have a dress code and are required to attend.
Auditer was happy with that (even showed a photo of me wearing them)

There was some things i should not have claimed but did, when audited they said i couldnt claim them, I agreed and paid the difference. Not that big of a deal if they reject the claim.

I work in a lab and claim "acid-proof shoes", never a problem. The job requires "closed footwear, robust construction".

Saw RM Williams spare tyre cover in Repco for Boeing pilots' land cruisers, I'm sure the ATO would understand the need

RM do a nice “ security scan” friendly & oil resistant, non slip sole, specific to aircrew ops, definitely ATO tax deductible! Aircrew discount was available( pre covid?) if purchased at airport?

So you get a discount off the price that includes the 'airport tax'? Which brings the price down to about 30% more than retail?

Well, if you're passing through the terminal, still flashing your ASIC, and can't be bothered waiting until you get your laptop open in the hotel room..

I assume everyone here has seen it already, but I'll post the ad just in case:

The exhorbitant mark up that businesses in Australian airports are forced to pass on due to the effing stupid rents in these places.

Are the comfy? No
Are they durable? No. I am on to my fourth pair in addition to numerous resoles etc.
Are they ridiculously overpriced? Yes.

Would I be seen in public without them? NO! They are probably the most all round shoe I can get that fits me. Work, Dress, semi casual, pub after work, Whatever.
Worth ordering them in Kanga. Same price and softer, more durable leather

Of course selling to a captive audience has nothing to do with it either......

You need to wax them if you want them to last. Just rub Dubbin into them every few months and they will last forever.

You just get the bastards comfy, 3 to 4 years, then you need a re-sole.

Are they durable? No. I am on to my fourth pair in addition to numerous resoles etc.
Well, they are durable, mine cop a belting, they don't let you down.

Are they ridiculously overpriced? Yes.
Absolutely not! Even with the re-soles they're cheap when you look at the wear you get out of them.

Would I be seen in public without them?

Couldn't give a **** whether I'm seen in them or not, they're ******* workboots.

That you can wear your work boots to the disco is a bonus.

Rightio, sounds good.

It's not the leather that is the problem, it's supinating feet.

Not claimable, they are not a safety boot, ie steel cap, nor does your role have requirement for such.
However claim them, you will get away with it and if by some rare reason you don’t, apologise and give the money back. You are only stealing from thieves anyway. My craftsman’s are 18 years old. Smooth soles = Less stones carried onboard.

At the prices they are charging for RM Williams, I'd be saving them for special occasions rather than wearing them to work. If you want to try claiming your footwear I'd suggest you buy it from a specialist work wear shop. A receipt from King Gee or Hard Yakka, claimed as a work expense is much less likely to attract attention,
