I had never heard of Appin, but have noticed it’s quite close to Wedderburn.

Might not be the same Appin you're thinking of, Squawk7700. There's the small township of Appin near Kerang in northern Vic, but the article's talking about Sydney - maybe a suburb, I don't know.

Appin NSW is next to Wedderburn NSW.

With further reporting now claiming it is registered overseas, I guess that's a fairly unique identification for those that know.

ADS-B doesn't show anything around the time of the reported crash, even though Wedderburn has coverage down to ground level.

RN news also said ATSB is looking into pilot history and weather conditions. (I can assist: The WX in the Appin area at the time was severe CAVOK. Pretty warm. I wasn't in the air, though.)

Another example of the utility of the WeatherCam system...Here's the two shots from the Windy.com archives either side of the accident looking southwest. The accident occurred about 2NM SSW. In this case, Wedderburn even overlay their own PWS data on the images. Short of severe turbulence causing an inflight breakup (chance of that? Buggerall...methinks) I feel we can safely discount weather as a factor.

0145Z / 0245L about the time of the crash, looking Southwest towards the crash site.

0245Z / 0345L looking Southwest, following the crash.

A stall turning base or final perhaps? Would not be the first time.

I think the foreign registered rumour is a furphy, arising from the snippet of information about the aircraft being a kit built aircraft ‘from overseas’. As we know, just because the kit happens to have been produced overseas doesn’t mean the aircraft, once constructed, is foreign registered.

A little bit of googling shows there is an N reg Glasair Super 2 FT with a Subaru motor registered to a Sydney address.

I stand corrected. Thank you.

As these details are apparently public, why not post them?

If like me, in the vain hope some parasite journalist doesn't know where to look and try to knock on the door of a grieving family.

Then I suppose the parasite journalists will get the details from the ATSB's website, once the ATSB publishes them.

It's all here. I am surprised the NT accident thread has disappeared.

Someone obviously called out BB’s culture, or how LG is away on holidays with newbies left to fend for themselves in the wet season.

Media reports a witness saying the aircraft was revving out of control and not climbing. Another report that the aircraft had a Subaru engine. Aircraft fitted with Subaru engines that I have seen have had belt driven reduction gearboxes.

If this aircraft had a similar set up, a belt failure would result in symptoms reported by the witness.

Certainly wouldn’t be the first time a belt driven Subaru combo has failed, if that’s what happened. These days most of the newer ones have a proper gearbox from what I’ve seen.

Apparently, the witness referred to is a pilot.

Several YouTube videos of “Subaru Glasair” Certainly is a high rev engine sound with the re-drive. And in the vids it climbs well.

Of note from the media report:

“..Mr Mitchell said 2022 had been one of the worst years on record for light plane fatalities, with 23 deadly crashes across Australia..”
