My sympathy to pilots and family. This was not the Christmas they had hoped for.

I find the above comparison, common but very useless. Because most people (self included) have no idea how safe a 747 is. I could not tell you, off the top of my head, the accident / fatality rate of 747's.
So the statement basically says "This thing you don't know is different to this other thing you don't know." To quote the mice from hitchhiker's "Sounds very significant without actually tying you down to meaning anything at all."

Having rubbed shoulders with the SAAA crew you could just as accurately replace "Amateur kit built" with "Lovingly Hand Crafted"
