Class 2 Aviation Medicals and hearing tests in OZ
Hi guys,
Went to get my medical today at a GP in Melbourne (Class 2 Basic) and was surprised that the GP wanted to conduct an audiometry test which he did. I am only looking to get back into flying as a PPL.
The GP also did not realise that it's the average (as I understand it) of the 0.3, 1, 2, & 3 Khz > 40 dB not the individual results that are required to be below 40dB in order to meet the Commercial Vehicle Class 2 Basic Standard for the better ear as well.
Slugged me $180.00 for the test! which I thought originally was going to be $130.00.
Have never had to do an audiometry test for an aviation medical before as a Private Pilot for a Class 2 medical - is this something new that has come in?
My last medical was in 2018 and was done by a DAME without an audiometry test as a full Class 2.
Worried now that every 2 years (I am over 40) that I will need to do an full audiometry test for my Class 2 Basic Medical.
Clear skies.

Basic Class 2 is based upon the Commercial driver standard. Hearing is clinically assessed, and if not satisfactory, then audiometry is completed.
If your hearing was satisfactory, well the GP is taking you for a ride, just like many do daily.
Basic Class 2 is a very hit and miss experience across the board. My son attempted one last year (attractive due to 7 year expiry, instant print out, cheaper) first GP refused to do it, next one shuffled paperwork and made phone calls then said no, so we went to the regular DAME who actually refused to do them as he did not agree with the process. I think it was more he got paid less to do them so wasn’t interested.
Nothing is easy in CASA Medical land.

Poppa, my Doctor wouldn't do it either.
The use of the word "unconditional" in the paperwork destroys the whole foundation of the certificate. This was obviously intended by CASA.

The basic class 2 is fit for some and not for all. If you’re a fit and healthy PPL, then it’s great as the unconditional aspect of it is a no-brainer for many.
If you have the odd health issue, then a class 2 is likely better for you and worse case the lesser medical with the conditions attached.
I can understand a doctor not wanting to do it, as I doubt my GP would be aware that at the end, their name is stamped on the bottom of my aviation medical! I go into mine under the concept of need to know and they don’t need to know about that part.
