Nosedive at Parafield Airport this morning

Beech B55 Baron VH-ALR took a nosedive at Parafield in the early hours of this morning when the nosewheel jammed. Aircraft was returning from the Riverland - Rennmark thence Waikerie. Pilot & passenger ok.

TV News services showed the landing. Channel 7 featured comments from 'Aviation Expert' Geoffrey Thomas.

The ABC showed more sense.

Had to be restrained from throwing heavy objects at the TV screen.

I missed seeing it on the ABC, Can't imagine what useful input GT could have had! I watched the playback on FightAware & the poor fella done about 18-20 circuits before he committed himself to the landing.

I know what you mean about wanting to throw things at the TV screen!

Part of Channel Nines description. "Upon crashing into the tarmac, the pilot initiated a final approach and landed on two wheels." Now we know exactly what happened !

Channel Nine report also said ...'with the aircraft sustaining minor damage.' Hahahaha really..? Nose wheel collapses, 2 x props gone, 2 x IO-470's need a rebuild, etc etc. Anyone want to throw a $ figure at the repair bill..? Substantial I'd guess..!

Unfortunately probably more than what the airframe is worth these days if it hasn’t got the latest avionics in it. A decision for the insurance company I guess. If they write it off, it could be a good buy for anyone who has a bit of cash to splash and wanted to put a pair of new IO 550s and 3 bladed props on it. Good little touring machine that can get along fast with plenty of range.

Must admit that the lack of the use of that phrase surprised me. A bit like when TV newsreaders describe a car crash. The Car has always 'slammed into' whatever it has collided with.

I know what it cost to forget the hand towbar on a Piper 28, or having a prop striking a stone when landing in terrain and not ensuring enough air in the nose oleo.....

It was expensive as hell in both cases, in the first one we cracked the crank shaft casing and had to decide between repair and a brand new engine (the old was the original), we did go with the old in the end because old engines are usually good when they've run 25+ years without problems (mechanic said). Second case we were a bit more lucky, no problems with the engine. Both cases cost us the propeller though.

It would be around $100,000 - engines, props and sheet metal.

Broken gear bit extra and not covered by insurance.

Don't be silly, Mr. Flower, I never thought for a moment you would attempt to use professional and correct terminology in future if it's beyond your knowledge level to do so. Would you consider avoiding complaints about the ice-cream licker standard of journalism, though, if you're going to use ice-cream licker language in your posts?
