Bingo. He seems so surprised at how accommodating ATC are. Imagine his surprise at how easily he get gets his class G clearances.

He does fly IFR a bit, I suspect in that airspace he would usually be IFR. Plus the airspace is confusing, with C over E over D which the maps do not show well. I am sure that the controller would prefer to be talking to you if you are in any doubt.

Of course, none of us here has ever made a mistake whilst flying!
In the video at the 2:35 mark, he makes the comment on how he will no doubt be judged on his abilities.
I’m mildly jealous though. I don’t have the means to enjoy the flying he does.

On the flip side and not referring to his abilities as a CPL trained IFR pilot, how is the Avalon airspace that complicated that someone with his experience doesn’t know how to transit through it, and if so, how did this happen, because if he is making this mistake, how many others are?

I think I read here somewhere that airspace over Avalon is changing soon, does anyone know when and what to?

It looks like from 2010 to 2019 Avalon Class E operated as effectively Class D. Instrument CASA 178/10 required a pilot to maintain 2 way communication with the tower while operating in the airspace. That would constitute a clearance in Class D.

Instrument CASA 178/10 was repealed in 2019.

I can see how someone who worked from their charts and/or how they were trained instead of keeping up with the legislative instruments might make mistakes. It also seems reasonable to be cautious - I don't know whether Instrument 178/10 has been replaced by something with similar effect.

I can’t recall the entry being ERSA and I don’t have an old one to check, however I assume there must have been a one-liner in there saying that you had to pretend the class E is like class D and make calls in class E, like no other class E anywhere else (presumably), to a controller that is not based on the ground and not in direct contact with the aircraft in class C below. Makes sense!

So it looks like you can blast through the class E there as you please now. There’s no mention of any instruments in the ERSA that replace the old one.

Not confusing at all eh???

I recall entering the class E there a few years ago and being vectored around other aircraft by Melb approach and on one occasion I was advised to completely steer clear of the whole area due to some incoming aircraft in case they needed to go-around.

Thanks for this info. I was told off by Avalon ATC for not broadcasting my intentions to enter class E (on a flight test of all times!). I wasn't aware of the CASA instrument or it’s subsequent repeal.

Edit: this was several years ago.

No he isn't... Hes a professional and a business owner... His flying is purely a passion that he shares...

in his Instagram it says he’s still a captain. But he isn’t. You’ll notice if you look at it he hasn’t posted a photo of him in the flight deck of an aircraft in a very long time. But still puts on his captains uniform and takes photos in his house to post. There’s negativity towards them due to the amount of embarrassment a lot of them have caused to the industry. Yeah there’s some good ones for sure but there have been a lot of moments where pilots have looked at it and put their head in their hands. It’s better to just focus at the job at hand rather than get caught up trying to get YouTube famous.
