Be prepared to smell stuff that you will never forget. Then you will remember that living beings can really smell that dead.
Just as important as covering the pitot, don't forget to take it off. Especially if you use the pitot heat.
Always keep the grid MORA/LSALT in mind if you get caught out.
Flys. Lots and lots of flys.
Yes that can be done along with any decent size battery but not much use to you if its the starter motor, solenoid stuffed or ring gear not engaging due worn out.

Never drop a passenger off in the middle of nowhere without ensuring someone is there to pick them up, people have died after being forgotten about.

Your passengers are likely to include indigenous Australians, learn how to deal with them and learn about them. In the event of a forced landing, an Aborigine who knows the bush is better than a survival kit. Show them a bit of respect and they will soon warm to you.

Take lots of photos, in 15 years time when you are in the cruise between London and Hong Kong, show them to your F/O.

Keep a toilet roll in your flight bag, much more gentle to use than spare ILS plates.

Buy a Lithium battery starter. It will start any aircraft or truck and charge your mobile phone.
They are very small and light and fit easily in your back pack with socks, jocks, hat , personal EPIRB, insect repellant and several litres of water

Don't forget a book to read while waiting for the customers. And to read for those long boring flights.

The things I wished I had of been told and knew before doing GA.

1 - always without fail do a walk around before getting in (after loading pax/freight whatever). This is crucial. I can’t stress it enough.

2 - take Vick’s in your headset bag. Trust me.

3 - shake the wings before doing a fuel drain and do more than one when it’s been raining. It could be all water.

4 - you can hand swing a 520. Just don’t.

5 - always leave the beacon on. You’ll leave the master on one day and flat batteries suck ^ see above.

6 - if you’re really stupid and get stuck in bad weather. Go high don’t go low. Speak to someone and get help once you’re not going to hit anything.

7 - Never run min fuel. It’s just stupid.

8 - keep some muesli bars and snacks in your bag. It sucks being hot, thirsty and hungry.

9 - Don’t be nice. Swear back. Stand your ground with unruly passengers. They’ll like you after that. And respect you more.

10 - If you find yourself in something big dark and scary. Put the gear down and ride the wave. Don’t chase your altitude. What goes up will come down and you don’t want to be at Vne when it happens.

11 - loading system kilo is legitimate. It just sucks in a C207.

12 - There’s defects and there’s defects. Know when to stand your ground.

One more I’d like to add:

After rain never land on a dirt airstrip with standing water on it. ( even if owner says he’s checked it and it’s fine!)

A spark plug (or two) and an appropriate wrench. Calibrated torque wrench for bonus points with the employer.

Failed plugs aren't much fun (espeically at 100ft after takeoff) but quite resolvable. The cooler-to-touch is the one to replace.

Depending upon the aircraft, some rudder springs are good too. Plus some coins/washers to add to the springs to make them easier to spread.
