A flght simulator will form part of a $10 million Labor commitment to help Cairns take off as a world-renowned destination for training pilots.
...but someone at CQU knows somebody in the ALP or a union and hey presto.
It's a bit like the $4m funding for marketing and promotion to get more women into aviation.
Sometimes I wonder if this "get more women into aviation/mining/whatever is some sort of rort.
When was the last time you saw a campaign to get more men into teaching or nursing or hairdressing?

Just a couple of years ago the NQ Aeroclub had to move to YMBA because of ops restrictions and outrageous (privatized) airport owner imposts.
YMBA...much better wx, access to controlled airspace and heaps of training area outback
AND...opening of YMBA redevelopment @ $25 mil last Thursday !!

And I guess the reason why women are encouraged to take more interest in aviation is to leave a few spaces as hairdressers for the many men unable to aspire to the skies.

“Support for the investment?” Like investing in building a BBQ in the crater of a Volcano! I’ve flown out of YMBA and the CP’s advice prior to the start of the wet season was to get your flying done by midday because of the afternoon turbulence. I had a taste of high density altitude there as well, which is going to be a surprise for ab initio students. As for wet season flying I can’t comment but i wouldn’t call Cairns and surroundings a meteorological benign area for students.

Yes....a bit like Melbourne, really. We couldn't possibly train ab-initio students at a place like Moorabbin.....far too many clouds in the winter-time, not to mention all the airspace. Utterly impossible.
The penny WILL drop. They can do all the theory they like in CNS but for the flying bit, the only near and logical option is YMBA.
And maybe they'll even build a big hangar to put all their aircraft in...52 lots of varying sizes now avbl at the Mareeba Airport (Western Precinct) Aviation Park..!!

We all have had exciting "lessons" in the aviation business, to dwell on and digest..ie.ffs dont do that again !
The two mantras I tell the younger...1... Know thy aeroplane, intimately. AND...
2 . Know the weather: watch it, study it learn it, to avoid getting done over by it.
Aah... the loveliness of clouds. But only from the right perspective !

There seem to be way more airports in Qld north of Townsville than in the whole of Victoria which suggests that there is a lot of people flying around up there. Simulators are independent of weather I find and perhaps the school is focusing on winter time tables for its flying activities.

Strong SE trades bang moist maritime air up against the coastal ranges and it becomes u/s for vfr., low cloud and dzl. caught and killed a few. And one lucky young couple who lobbed into a big tree canopy lived to tell the tale !
Inland OK...depending on the strength of the wind, harder the blow , further in the wx gets...once past COE ...clear as a bell to Broome !
Best times, change of the season..April/ May and post Dry Sept/Oct
