QANTAS Max baggage size

Looking for pointers on making two custom sized boxes
to bring as baggage back to Aus from Vancouver or LAX.

The official weight limit 2 x 23 kg each
with 2 pieces of 270cm / 106 in
no single piece exceeding 158cm or 62 in

Can anyone fill me in on what the rules are in practice?
Last time I traveled they just went by weight.

Are the weight and size rules enforced?
How much lee way to you get in practice?

I have never been queried re size out of Vancouver. Not for check-in luggage.
Nor have I been penalised even for a couple of kilo's over.

But that's no guarantee that you won't get hit, of course.

If you really want an education, take a look at the check-in lines for Manila-bound flights at Vancouver.
In some cases it would probably be cheaper to charter a freighter.
