PUSH FOR RESTRICTIONS ON DEVELOPMENT CLOSE TO AIRPORTS
Great to see that the Department of Infrastructure has made progress on the important issue of Public Safety Zones. Looking forward to seeing the new policy implemented in November 2018.
Following the tragic fatal King Air accident at Essendon Airport, 21st February 2017, the AOPA Australia made a public call for Public Safety Zones to be established around all Australian airports along with a review into non-aviation airport developments that pose a risk to aviation safety.VIEW THE STUDIO10 INTERVIEW HERE:

Have you seen the massive warehouses nearing completion just beside the 35R threshold ? And the new ones on the other side of 35L ?
Seems that Moorabbin Airport Corporation didn't read the article above...

"Airports wouldn't have to review existing masterplans ......." Well there's an out for the YMMB owners - and they wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to make mega bucks from development on their land.

What a great Political move the Cantberra crew cover their collective Ar-e's by developing a strategy to protect the public from development that they created by selling off our Airports. The green tinged councils love the proposal but they allowed the development to go ahead because they love the rates even more than safety even though they hate Airports.
The new restrictions of course will not be retrospective thats why the likes of Moorabbin Airport Corporation has been furiously building all around the Airport.
And the result of this new infrastructure proposal will be ?
And any ATSB report recommendations into the DFO accident or a Coroners finding will be?

I still remember when Runway 22 was about 300m longer than it is now. You could get a Chieftain in there when the gusty southwesterlies were in and the other runways were useless.
‘Twas the dumbest bit of aviation vandalism in many a year sticking all those buildings on the NE corner of the airport.
This horse has well and truly bolted.

Essendon Airport’s retail park has a line of verticle billboards and two mobile phone towers that protrude above the entire length of the roof of the building by at least 20 feet.

The land on the western side, was not vested in MAC. There are rumours that someone is trying to get that land from the Commonwealth and build apartment towers as this area is not in a flightpath.
The thinking is high rise there is no more of a problem than Southland.

The land on the airport on the south west corner is being heavily developed. Down past the helicopter mobs.
Less free space around the airport. I'm presuming the airport corporation are leasing out that land to businesses like on the other two corners of the airport.

A continuous stream of dump trucks is removing dirt from the South West corner and transporting it to the North West corner, near to DFO.
Is this soil contaminated by fire fighting foam?

Yes Mount PFAT is glorious! 8 Metres high at its highest point. Made from (toxic) fire fighting foam in the dirt however it is well below the dangerous level, but above the level that allows it to be transported off-site.
Too little too late. All this development happened on Albanese's watch, he ignored the concerns of the airport sub-tenants and allowed the developers to build whatever they wanted wherever they wanted. If we are going to get him back again in the next election don't expect anything to change.
It's good to see the government being "seen to be doing something" even if it is pointless. The Moorabbin crash was on approach after the aircraft had been flying around for an hour. Any time before it crossed the fence it was always going to be in a suburb somewhere. How big do you make these Safety Zones?
