How long woukd it take to commence training for F/O on the 787?

You cannot promote from the 787 as an SO to FO. The general route is via 320.

You would have to be promoted to 320 FO before being able to upgrade to 787 FO, so roughly 4-5 years

Initial cadets are now getting commands.
The initial SO’s are now just elligable for A320 FO slots.
