Single down in Moorabbin Street
A Cessna from OA has gone down short of the runway at Moorabbin, seems to have lost power 200m short in Scarlett Street just before Lwr Dandenong Road, reports are no injuries.
Seems very similar to the incident when one ended up in a backyard swimming pool a few years ago.
EDIT reports at least one dead.

Latest is one confirmed dead inside aircraft believed to be the only occupant. Rego seems correct as now reported as a single engine.
Flight radar show speed dropped to 75 to 56 kts or thereabouts
RIP a sad loss.
having seen the factories that are now directly in the flight path for the 35 LR runways, where there was once a wire fence and some small buildings a garden supplies etc, is now monster factories, doesnt give a pilot any hope of gliding now theres no safe margin anymore.

Dead in line with 35L, and the wind is directly ahead at 12 knots. But its still a bit wet and the sun is setting at 5 PM. The sun would have been directly on the horizon to the left. Is it possible the pilot got too low and slow, due to poor visibility?

Maybe I am old fashioned, but I really find the publication of pictures showing the aircraft on fire whilst the pilot is still inside and possibly alive extremely distasteful and unnecessary.

Those factories have been there a while, I used to think about landing alternatives should the donk let go when I was training there almost 25 years ago. Not many alternatives other than the roads or a factory roof. Very Sad.
Now that 22 is gone I shudder to think of any other option other than straight ahead.
(Noting that once I did have an engine catch fire on take-off on 17L and ended up safely on 22 with no power).

Last time I was given a taxi clearance to 31L, which is the bane of communications at Moorabbin under class d standards, I can assure you that 04/22 is very much alive and tying the tongues of every poor pilot who has to read back.

Can anyone tell me what the weather down in Melbourne was like today. I'm just north of the ranges and all day it was 10/10ths crap weather with heavy rain and low cloud. Even choppers couldn't get through the Kilmore Gap VFR.

Crashed painfully close to a big open field which the houses on Scarlet Street back onto.
Weather seemed calm (in Moorabbin area), but a touch of drizzle throughout the afternoon, winds eased.
As shown on the news it left a trail of fire along the street (east-west), which seemed to be a controlled crash landing as the airport runway line of sight was north-south.

Whats of interest (according to the latest news reports) is the pilot was a company engineer onboard, heavily experienced.The aircraft in question has been active most days so no major overhauls. Question will be what warranted an engineer to conduct multiple circuits (before what I assume would be night ifr sessions going off it’s logs for this week). Something was obviously up. Something was being checked. High chance another person was aware of what he was checking.

wheels_down, doesn't appear to have been doing circuits went out to the South East, was climbing and descending a bit, can't really tell exactly what was happening, over a field somewhere perhaps practicing something or inspecting the area? Was doing Circuits a couple of hours earlier on though.

Of course the data isn't 100% accurate as you can see on FlightRadar24 from it's final point being different to the actual final position by a couple of hundred metres.

I was out driving around the area between Mentone and Dandenong from about 4pm until 5:30pm; I was in the nearby supermarket at the time of the crash and saw emergency vehicles heading east on Lower Dandenong Road when I emerged into the carpark. It was dry; the Bureau of Met recorded 0.8mm of rain at the airport between 9am and 10:30am and nothing more since.
Sunset was 17:08 local time, about 6 minutes before the crash.
