Totally agree. Fresh IFR pilot who can fly a Seneca without A/P on an arc to join an ILS? Easy for you. Having progressed from the piston twin to the turboprop/737/747 and back to ATR I can tell you that bigger jets are FAR easier to FLY then lighter props of any kind. So no worries ; )

Air NZ recruitment will be to cover attrition for at least the next year or so. Currently, there’s only 5 intakes on the course planner for the next 6 months (roughly).
Theres a lot of Link Pilots on the list at the moment, so assuming they get released, external recruitment will probably be closed until the next wave.... possibly when the 787-10’s start arriving if they add new routes for some expansion.

There is no intention to hire any externals for the foreseeable future. Including those interviewed and waiting. Link pilots will fill vacancies as they come up.
The traditional access to AirNZ jet jobs has basically stopped. It is from the regionals now. Another massive expansion will probably see some externals hired again (at a worse ratio than now) but those at exec level believe link pilots can mostly fill these roles and they are willing to take that risk.
Any external coming into jet will be a below every link captain on the list so add another 10 years to their progression. Whether this is appealing depends on the individual and their career aspirations, where they have come from and ego. Airforce guys will probably stop applying too.
What started as, and still, is a regional manpower issue has changed the jet recruitment forever. For all the rhetoric from Link pilots about being one company, their management viewed them as separate and deliberately undermined the jet recruitment hiring boards to retain their pilots. Couple this with unprecedented expansion in Jet and Mt Cook together provided the perfect storm of need for external pilots. And the explicit instruction to recruit Jetstar pilots to fill the 320 expansion further exasperated the despair of Link guys and gals.
Let’s be clear, the company don’t really care about the pilots career progression, they care about filling the seats to keep the business profitable. It has been very convenient for them to get on the bandwagon of regional pilots and the perceived unfairness of hiring, when they created it and drove it! And now hiring into the jet fleet has now become an expectation by regional pilots.
The junior link pilots will still leave and the senior link pilots sold them a lemon. This current process has benefited some those senior pilots who probably shouldn’t be on a jet and disadvantaged those that should.

Don't fret too much, nothing is for ever.
I don't agree with some of your assessment on how the current situation arose but you can be sure it will change when it suits the "company".
One company? Anyone who thinks Air new Zealand is "one company" is seriously deluded. It's "one company" when it suits the company but at all other times it's most certainly not "one company".

I don’t know exactly how many Regional Pilots have had problems/failed their Jet ratings recently, but Flight Deck gossip suggest its more than half. I don’t know what the Pathways project will look like in the end, but I suspect we’ll see some changes in the future.
Those Senior Link Pilots who opened the back door may end up closing it behind them.

I don’t know exactly how many Regional Pilots have had problems/failed their Jet ratings recently, but Flight Deck gossip suggest its more than half. I don’t know what the Pathways project will look like in the end, but I suspect we’ll see some changes in the future.

Ok so how is that going? Do you still have 787's parked up with a shortage of engines? Is this affecting turboprop movement onto jets ? Are you still looking at many turbo prop movements after the Corona crisis?
They are already preemptively hiring and training on the Turbroprop fleets.
This new change in recruitment (no externals) is a load a crap. So many experienced jet pilots being turned away in exchange for some 25yo ATR captain with a fresh ATPL.
If an experienced jet pilot really wants to fly for Air NZ, jump on a turboprop for them. They'll get a quick command, be able to live almost wherever they like within NZ, and will be on a pretty good contract/lifestyle to boot.
So what? That ATR Captain has probably done 5 years of service with the company give or take and their number is coming up. They've also elected to not leave and work for another airline in this time, when they will have had the option to do so. Meanwhile your experienced jet pilot has been off providing their services to another airline. I don't have an issue with an internal candidate receiving priority in this way.

I have an offer to attend an assessment centre shortly... there has been a few search results about pay and conditions which by the looks of things not publicly available. Does anyone have the latest on pay for a new FO on the ATR/Dash fleet? Would appreciate a PM =)

Pay? Some retail jobs pay more. Think circa 70K starting rate. Conditions? Rostered 10 hours 25 min to fit roster requirements, with minimum break in the middle. Blows out to closer to 12 hours if you throw some engineering or weather issues. After 6 sectors, you go home exhausted, next day, back to do it all over again.
