The waste of our money continues!

Keep racking up costs for Oz industry and waste like this happens:
From an expat pilot of 30yrs in PNG

“Just heard another story on how your Png aid is being wasted.
Aust aid fund 2 x Bell 212 helicopters for the PNG defence force on contract from hevi lift , crewed by expat pilots because there are no PNG national pilots or co pilots in the PNGDF ...

.One heli has been in wewak for the last 3 weeks flying out to the island which has has a volcanic eruption.
The helicopter crew were due for a crew change , but the PNGDF refused to pay for the airfares for the pilots out of Moresby to wewak.....so because aus aid are paying all the helicopter expenses including accomadation .....they flew the helicopter all the way to moresby to do the crew change, then back to wewak.....a 12 hr round trip, so instead of the PNGDF having to pay approx 3000 kina for airfares.....aust aid paid approx 100,000 kina in helicopter time......???

This country is so aid depandant....it will never be able to be 'independant'........

yet desite the aid, here we have to drive around town in first gear, because the pot holes are so bad....its like driving down a river bed.”

PNG is an independent Nation. It has a wealth of resources, timber, gas, oil and fisheries.
Seriously rich...well at least for some.!

That country should be left to its own devices to live within its own means ...and not be spoon fed (bloody big spoon !) from the Oz taxpayer.
"Welfare" by any other name.
Then PNG would face its own reality and have to sort it out themselves.
Oh, no..the Chinese have stepped in !

Wastage by bureaucrazies is everywhere...Oz is no exception.

CAsA peed away $250K +/-on an 'investigation' about something they already knew about..was a deliberate CYA , 2 specific arses actually, exercise. Historical.

Recent. Jet charter out of Cairns...TWO flights by Health Dept..you know the one, billion plus wasted on IT pay system and the psuedo Prince got away with 16 mil...ONE flight could have sufficed with planning/coordination,so double the cost to the taxpayer.

No worries...plenty more dollars where all that comes from. !!

That this country has 3 levels of 'government' for just 24 mil people shows how really dumb we are. The wastage runs into the billions and made worse but a tidal wave of regulations, fees and imposts.

If any foreign power was contemplating invading PNG, they would be unlikely to encounter resistance (except from raskols). The PNGDF is not too mobile at the moment....

Ever wonder what this place would have been like if Jimmy Cook didn't run up the flag on Possession Island in 1770?

The reason we pump money into small nations surrounding Australia is because we don't want to be surrounded by failed states.

No rule of law or border protection would make these places gold mines for anyone wanting to set up drug operations etc

'Rule of Law' (sic) Border protection etc...da da
Is that why it has been so busy across the Torres Straits.and to remote parts of the Cape coast?

Hopefully things are improving...but its still along way from Cantberra.

It’s inshrind in history, border protection - Kokoda campaign.

PNG isn’t a failed nation, it’s PNG. It will never be anything like Australia or any other place due to culture. Do they need help, yes and shit loads of it. The fellow wantoks over the border need a bucket load more help though.

Coruption is rampant, seriously bad, tribal dislikes is the norm, owning pigs is a higher regard than having a wife. The country is mineral rich / timber rich / gas rich. Nepotism abounds, religions invade.
Indonesia lurks waiting waiting, australia wants a buffer between us and indonesia......hello PNG.
And BTW......there's a lot of ex pat ozzies their, doing just nicely.

Should have been Australia's Alaska and everyone would benefit. Gough Whitless created this schamozzle by granting Independence without a natural transition..

Em Nau! As one PNG National I knew way back when, once told me in a moment of candour;

"We should not have been granted independence for at least another two generations!"

Make of that statement what you will.

I left TPNG the year before independence. I consider Independence there was a crime against humanity.

The pacific forum is winding up on Nauru. Australia chose not to send the new prime minister or anyone I’ve heard of but needless to say it was a warm socialist hug fest where the overriding outcome was the need for more assistance (read cash aid) to help with disaster resilience and the fight against climate induced sea level increases.

I’m assuming the money will be used to fill bags for building tidal berms..However Australians be aware..the UN will look unfavorably at any nation that refuses to stump up with more money for helping our pacific brethren

It's amazing how money alone mitigates climate change when Pacific Islands are involved.

and the fight against climate induced sea level increases.
Once read an article long time ago in (I think) Time Magazine which was written by a Geologist who stated that, with some of the Pacific Islands, on one side of the Island the sea level appears to be rising whilst on the other side it is falling!

In other words, the Island is subsiding on one side whilst rising on the other! The inference was that the sea level was not altering but the land level was!

However, the above would not attract any funding now, would it!

There are a few ways we directly measure sea level. One is tide gauge observations—simply measuring the height of a tide on a fixed marker. As the tide marker is attached to land, this provides a measurement of sea level relative to land. In some areas, the land might be rising (uplift) which would mean the local sea level would be falling faster than if there was no land motion. In other areas, the land might be subsiding, which would result in higher local sea-level rise.Another method is satellite altimetry, where satellites measure the actual height of the ocean surface.

By combining these two methods, scientists can put together a picture of average global sea level changes.

There Pinky. Now you can enjoy your well deserved red without fretting.

OK then, in my ignorance, just how much have sea levels risen since the Industrial Revolution? And if it is increasing catastrophically, will all those windmills and magic squares on rooftops that my tax subsidises ameliorate it? (Not thread drift, as the title is 'The waste of our money continues').
