Absolutely horrid year for GA...

Taking a quick look at FlightRadar its clear what the aircraft was, but I won't post it publicly in case the family has yet to be told.

2 POB deceased, what a terrible week.

Two people dead in light plane crash near Port Macquarie - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

It says Cessna, looks like a Cessna, but I'm not familiar with which model has VG's in front of the rudder.

Dangerous spot up there. Always busy with student pilots. Used to fly the Q400 in there and remember it being a nightmare getting through on the CTAF with Taree and Port on the same freq.

crime scene

Indicates that the police have secured/will secure the area to protect evidence and so forth. Procedural term rather than indicating a crime, per se.

ATSB reporting a C310
The ATSB will be investigating the collision with terrain of a twin-engine Cessna 310 aircraft which occurred near Port Macquarie, NSW at around 4pm EDST this afternoon.
A team of three Transport Safety Investigators from Canberra will travel to the site shortly to begin their investigation.
The investigators will examine the wreckage, gather any available recorded data and interview witnesses.
The ATSB encourages anyone who witnessed the accident to call 1800 020 616.
No further information about the accident is available at this time.
The ATSB will release a preliminary investigation report in approximately 30 days. A final report into the accident may take approximately 12 months to complete.
However, should a safety issue be identified during the course of the investigation, the ATSB will immediately notify owners and operators of the aircraft type and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

For those that aren't familiar with the area, there are two privately owned strips south of YPMQ.

The first is Camden Haven Airfield which you can almost see from the Pacific Highway. Then there is another a little bit further south which I think is 'The Lakes' ALA and if the article posted above is anything to go by the deceased owned that strip and the accident occurred near there.

I think they said something about a Jones Lake strip on TV this morning. He may have taken off from there.
