Jetstar Rosters/Lifestyle?

Interested to hear from the Jetstar FO's particulary those based in Sydney as to what there rosters are like? I'm currently at QLink and am interested in Jetstar (Sydney base) and have heard (like most airlines) Jetstar guys working hard up to 1000 hours a year.

We do some decent days at QLink as well and was wondering if a few guys/gals could give me an idea of what a typical roster looks like - a typical day, how many overnights, reserve days etc and what the overall vibe is like with the crew working there.

Thanks in advance...

This would be a better option and they are hiring right now for exactly what you are after.

"Contracts will be for a minimum term of (10) months. At the completion of the contract, it may be possible to gain permanent employment with Tigerair"

Sounds like a stella opportunity.

I don't want to leave the Qantas Group - they've got good benefits and I get to retain my staff travel priority and long service leave still remains etc etc

Not interested in working for someone that tells me after a short time that I cannot be extended. I don't know many people that would be interested in that.

A typical monthly roster in any base in any airline won't be typical from one year to the next. Eighteen months ago your typical roster for an F/O was high hours and very little time off. Now the F/O's hours are less but they are still being sent to NZ for 5 days at a time. As someone once told me, the Jetstar lifestyle equation is time or money = lifestyle.

You are asking yourself the wrong question. If you want to base a move from regional to jets just on the rostering then your focus is too narrow. Ask yourself what you want to be doing in 10 years time then 20 years time. You just can't decide on a whim that you are going to move on to the next step as that next step may not be available. At Jetstar they have recruited pilots from Rex who were happy to stay there until management upended there lifestyles. A lot of these pilots had over 10 years service with Rex. Imagine if they had made the move to jets 10 years ago. If you want to fly jets then just apply and sort out basing and rostering issues later.

Brucelee,

I used to work for Qlink albeit on the dash and I can tell you, to stay with a regional of that sort, although I enjoyed my time there very much, would be very unwise move. For all the reasons outlined above.

Jetstar's most significant issue would be rostering but there is progress being made slowly but surely and the problems that exist here could not easily be argued to worse than QantasLink for example.

Come on over if you can, it's a great place to work, rostering issues aside.

All of the new start pilots are being made full time at the moment. Flexi line is basically 75% of base pay for 75% base hours with a block of 7 days off every month and no standbys. Overtime rate and workday off payments are the same as full time pilots.

brucelee- have you put your application in yet? If you have, all the best with the process. If you haven't then you may be close to getting the window of opportunity slamming on your fingers. Jetstar have been running cadet courses and the first of those will be doing their type ratings towards the end of 2018. It can take up to 6 months just to get an application to the final interview stage. If you haven't applied yet any issues over FL and rostering may be irrelevant. As the saying goes, time and tide wait for no man.

Anyone kind enough to give an estimation on how long one would wait before being able to successfully bid for a base transfer from Melbourne? Interested in Cairns in particular.

A long time. F/O's in CNS are usually there out of choice so do not tend to bid out of there very often.

Is 6 months the norm from application to final interview stage (Realising that it varies based on a bunch of factors)? Also heard you can only apply to one QF group airline at a time....is this so?

Typical roster for Sydney:
- 12 to 13 days OFF per month
- 13 days ON per month
- 3 to 4 Standbys per month

Likelihood of being called in on a Standby day is higher than many other bases.

Likelihood of being called and offered work day off payments also higher than many other base.

Of the 13 rostered day’s on, expect roughly 9 to 10 of those to be 4 sector days, with an average rostered length of 8.5 to 9.5 hours.
Eg SYD-MEL-SYD-YBCG-SYD

However, given most of the shifts will find you flying into places like Brisbane and Melbourne, factor in fat for delays as well as the fantastic Sydney commute to the Blue Emu car park to wait for a Blue Emu bus - typically you can find yourself getting Home 12 hours from when you left your garage.

Personally, I felt Sydney had a use by date. You will feel burnt out yet you’ll also feel obligated to accept work day off payments to help pay the million dollar mortgage.

I packed my bags and went to a lifestyle base and haven’t looked back. If you are desperate to stay in Sydney then it’s doable until you can get on the 787, but current wait is 5 years to transfer to right seat.

It’s a great job guys, but unfortunately Sydney sucks the fun out of it. But right now that goes for pretty much every airline operating out of that airport.

Good luck

Good afternoon guys and gals,

What are the chance of getting employed directly into the Gold Coast base?

Well that's come at no surprise. 😂

What is the current wait time for a base transfer knowing full well the market changes daily?
How many crew are based there?
