Cessna 208 "rating"
Quick question lads,
In short the company's sending me this Sunday to complete a Cessna 208 rating & Basic Gas Turbine theory. Catch is, I'm working in Botswana as a swamp donkey on a Casa licence with a Botswana Validation.
To legally fly the 208, GTE endoursement on the CASA licence is required. Simuflight Johannesburg is the selected training provider. Ive had a read through the forms 61-4CT & AC 60-2, But still unsure if the foreign training will allow me to gain a GTE endorsement.
But please correct me if I'm wrong the GTE requires a ground school only?
how do i go about getting this endorsement approved as GTE onto my CASA licence?
gave casa a ring early this morning on Skype but the technical team had finished for the afternoon

If your intentions is to get the C208 rating on your CASA license whilst completing training in Johannesburg so that you can use the CASA validation to fly a Botswana registered aircraft I doubt very much you would be able to do such a thing. Although not 100% sure.
The only way I can think that would work is if you gained a South African CPL, gained the C208 rating on the South African license and then got the rating placed onto your CASA license (I think that is about $150 and simple paper work, which CASA will send an email to the SA authority to confirm the rating). Or just validate the SA license in Botswana.
To gain the SA license you would need, flight planning exam, Met exam, law & procedures exam, medical and IFR flight test ( which you could probably do as part of the rating).
I don't know much about the new part 61, so perhaps I am wrong about this.

generally we convert to botswana CPL's before going for the rating, although crewing requiments dont always allow for this.
You need 500hrs A2 reg before applying for a botswana CPL, the botswana validation is just validating the authenticity of my current CASA licence and allowing me to fly A2 aircraft as endorsed as per CASA. The 208 isn't a rating in Australia just a GTE ground school, but correct me if I'm wrong.

I think we agreed, in that thread, that while the C208 falls under the SE Class rating, it belongs to a small group of mostly turbine aircraft which CASA requires flight training and a flight review (so not a type rating and test, but similar) in order to exercise the privileges of your SE class rating on these particular aircraft. After that you just have to do the AFR on ANY SE class aircraft to maintain your privileges.
So, no, it is not as simple as doing a GTE groundschool, although if you don't already have GTE, they will have to cover those principles during the C208 ground school/briefings. You will then get GTE endorsement on your Part 61 FCL, but not a C208 endorsement/rating as it falls under the SE Class rating.

I did my C208 rating in Botswana back in 2011, it was a 3 day ground course and then 5hrs flight training.
I then had it placed on my CASA license without to much hassle, and it shows as a separate rating.
This was under the old license system in Australia, but I am fairly confident that it's still a seperate rating under part 61.
I understand what your trying to do, and recently went through a similar problem which required me to get a SA license.
I just don't believe that CASA will allow the placement of a rating directly onto the Oz license by an outside training provider. But I am sure they have exceptions.
Obviously fisrt point of call is CASA, and I wish you the best.

In the past under CAR this was easy, under Part 61 it has become a little more difficult as the forms do not exist for overseas training, for design features.
Since 2013 i have run C208B courses in Indonesia that have been accepted by CASA. I supplied them with a mountain of paperwork including the companies approval to run the course, my instructor and check approvals and all of the training records.
After Part 61 came in i was initially told they couldnt do that, an applicant was rejected after casa having the paperwork for 4 months, but then eventually they accepted and approved it issuing the GTE.
So in short yes it can be done, but get all your paperwork in order and send it all at the same time.
Follow up casa every week as it will be shoved to the bottom of the pile, its in the too hard basket. If you need, ask to speak to the team leader at CASA..

After a few emails & phone calls back & fourth, Casa has spoken unfortunately deemed it not possible. They will not issue a GTE endo on the basis of the caravan course I'm currently completing in SA, although I'm able to gain a bots license now & have a caravan "rating" on that license.
Casa will then issue myself a GTE on the basis of the bots license.
