Dick Smith should run for the lower house as a Liberal

In today's Australian there is an article where a recent poll showed that Dick would get 54% of the primary vote over imcumberant Browyn Bishop if he ran.

So Dick why not do a deal with the Liberals, offer to run as a Liberal if you get the Aviation portfolio. Then you can implement your ideals with the backing of a senior ministerial post.

The thought of CASA personal having you as the ultimate power may actually shock them into adopting FAA type responses and actions to Australia's Aviation industry

Imagine what would happen if Parliament House security tried to 'hold' him at the front entrance!

He would have to squark "hijack", but only if he has an ADSB TX

Devil

Second the original Post!

Go for it, Dick!

Really folks, what have we got to lose if he does have a go?

Because GA will be totally fecked sooner or later (if it isn't already) unless someone with a bit of clout has a go at changing the system as it stands.

Stuff joining any party . Peter Garrett was the environment minister , he had to sell out his values and approve mining developments. Even a uranium mine if I remember correct.

No, he didn't have to, he chose to.

Dick Smith should run for the lower house as a Liberal
Bahahahaha

Yeah go on Dick, destroy your reputation by joining the party that Bernardi, Abetz, Abbott, Christiansen and all the other God fearing crazies call home.

While I disagree with Dick on many things aviation, he's one of the few voices with influence out there that speaks utter sense when it comes to the myth of this country's capacity to handle unfettered growth.

A reported comment by Dick from News Corp:

“Our economic system is flawed,” he said. “It requires perpetual growth but it’s a finite world..."
“Everyone will be living like termites..."
Few words, but he nails it and he has been consistent on the topic. He also nails the numbers of what would constitute a sustainable population without sacrificing our enviable lifestyle - around 26 mill.

For all my arguments with Dick when it comes to aviation, he's one of the few that acknowledge reality on the subject of sustainability.

Add in his charity work and all-round patriotism and I'd vote for him if I lived in MacKellar.

I just wouldn't let him anywhere near the aviation portfolio!

Hmm... He's allegedly said he'll run if Chopper wins pre-selection, but not otherwise. Does he want to be in parliament or not?? What's Bronnie got to do with it apart from he thinks she's too old??

Better find the Morrison chequebook for all those transponders the GA punters will have to buy for access to all the E airspace he'll put in...

Do you guys seriously think Dick has the temperament for party politics? I very much doubt it. He's not a toeing the party line sort. He couldn't sit still or shut up long enough!

I don't see Dick as a party hack, either - he's a tad more dynamic than that.
As for dhp's suggestion that he "do a deal with the Liberals", just one question... Would you?

If Dick is seriously entertaining the idea of entering politics, then I would suggest that a Senate seat would be the way to go.

Just my personal take, but there's more to Dick's repertoire than aviation. He got a lot wrong, IMHO, in that regard. But he comes across with pure common sense in respect of 'sustainability.'

Our children will rue the day when we bequeath them an overpopulated country that can't house or feed itself. As Dick rightly points out, capacity is 'finite.'

From my perspective, this is a far larger issue than those we squabble on in this forum. But that doesn't mean I'll stop squabbling!

Dick's point could be described as 'mega-strategic.' It's an issue that will decide the quality of life that our descendants inherit. Unfettered growth is a dangerous chimera and Dick is about the only one warning of the consequences.

Just keep him away from the aviation portfolio!

Dick,
You'll have the most clout by winning a Senate seat as an Independent. Forget the lower house - it's been ruined by party politics and is achieving very little. happy days,

Is it possible . .. . or even conceivable that ZPG can be achieved?

Start with a movement or party that espouses the compelling principles
enumerated and advocated by EF Schumacher. .. . ?

You know there's Christians (and a Muslim) in the Labor party as well right?

Indeed there is. I would argue the Libs religious bunch are way more fanatical than Labor's though.

Also, having a go at the right wing of the LNP doesn't mean I'm a Labor voter. I just think it would be a bad marketing move for DS to join a party with so many loonies. Stay Independent.
