Requierments to fly into NZ Airports

We are planning a trip to Queenstown and I have been told from other pilots have been refused landing permission because they did not have experience at that airport. Are there restrictions for any airports in NZ like this?

I think they may have a spelling REQUIREMENT

Queenstown

It is controlled and you have to be very aware of the joining procedures.

Here is a link to the plates for Queenstown. (Both VFR and IFR).

These are not Jeppersen either but are pretty easy to read.

I would have your mountain flying up to scratch.

There are no restrictions for civil airports in New Zealand however ZQN is a capacity managed Airport for IFR operations of larger jet aircraft.

If you are not RNP AR approved it can be difficult to arrange a landing slot at the time you want. CAA is not disposed to issue the AR without substantial documentary evidence from state of registery for training and equipment compliance.

It is not difficult but it is a bit unusual in that it is class D airspace, no RADAR control, intensive parachute operations with three operators within 25 miles, extensive helicopter operations to and from the ski fields, parapont operations from the hills surrounding the airport and off the lake, largest GA fleet of senic flight operations in NZ, aerobatic joy rides with jet and warbird aircraft and flight training.

All of which is constrained in a tight Mountain Valley so all operations are squeezed togeather.

The weather is typical mountain country, lots of local wind currents that can be interesting. Think the Salmon River Idaho with B737 and A320 and you may get the picture.

That's not actually true;
For air transport ops:


(b) The pilot-in-command and first officer have satisfactorily completed an approved NZQN simulator exercise in a synthetic training device with specific NZQN airport and local topography features (visuals and terrain data).
(c) The pilot-in-command and first officer have completed a minimum of two familiarisation flights into and out of NZQN airport as an observer or as a crew member on a flight operated under the command of a pilot who is currently qualified on the aerodrome and is approved for this training.
22.2.2 A pilot previously qualified in accordance with paragraph 22.2.1 shall not continue to act as a flight crew member into and out of NZQN unless within the previous 12 months:
(a) The pilot has conducted at least two flights into and out of NZQN as a flight crew member; or
(b) The pilot complies with the qualification requirements of paragraph 22.2.1 above.
22.2.3 If the requirements of 22.2.1 (b) cannot be met due to the temporary unavailability of a suitable flight training device, then an alternate means of compliance for this requirement is the completion of a comprehensive CBT airport briefing package which includes visual depictions of the airport and surrounding areas, and the two familiarisation flights must be conducted in an observer capacity.

In practice it's not strictly enforced in my experience or that widely known.
Also aircraft weighing over 5700kg need specific approval of the Queenstown Airport Corporation..that's in there too..Scheduled ops do not need to.

Contact Rob Leach at AirCenterOne..they also operate the QN FBO and he will organise everything. He's forgotten more practical stuff about business aviation ops in NZ than most've us will ever know!

What type of aircraft are you flying in?

Also must you land at Queenstown? There are two other airfields within 1 hours drive from Queenstown that are uncontrolled and have no restrictions or special requirements.

Alexandra and Wanaka are both good fields with sealed runways. At Wanaka beware of extensive skydiving operations on the airfield, and Alexandra is likely to have gliding on the weekends (including a very nice ka6crpe).

Thanks Matt, I had forgotten about those pages.

However it does not apply to part 91 operations.

If the OP is a foreign ATO and doing more than two takeoffs and landings then part 129 applies. Foreign ATO operation requires NZ CAA approval to operate within NZ unless it is a VH tail with cross qualification NZ AU operations.

The Queenstown Airport Company approval is for parking and who to send the bill to!

Agree with you about RL. He also has an FBO type operation at ZQN itself now.
