Mr John McCormick Not Seeking Further Term.....
Was he part of the solution ( that didn't work) or part of the problem?
CASA isn’t an airline or a fighter squadron. CASA is a regulatory authority.
While ever the government and industry continues to believe that the primary qualification for the CASA DAS is aeronautical experience, the CEO-driven part of the problem will continue.
OA: Have you found out what the qualifications of AMSA’s CEO are yet? It will be an instructive exercise.
Creamy
To my uniformed eye, there are a number of factors that might make Graham Peachy a better choice than John McCormick.
1. He has been the CEO of a significant organisation
2. He has multiple, relevant business qualifications
3. He seems to have a deep engagement with multiple levels within his industry.
But, I suspect you mean a successful background in regulatory bodies.

It also looks like he has a history of expanding the role of his organisation, rather than having it narrowed.

You’re getting there, OA.
And does he have any qualifications or experience as a ship’s master, or as a marine engineer, or as a naval architect, or as a marine surveyor, or as shipping line operator, or as anything remotely connected with any subject matter regulated by AMSA?

creampuff one of my friends is a top notch aeronautical engineer.
whenever we discuss an aeronautical situation he homes in on the core facts faster than a heat seeking missile. boy does he have a clear view on things.
if the head of CASA was a qualified practising aeronautical engineer by hell would the legal landscape look different.

Not as such.
You need someone who knows when and how to use lawyers properly. Often that's a skill that comes from experience as a lawyer, but it's certainly not the only way to attain the necessary skill.
You need someone who also knows when and how to use the expertise of pilots properly, and the expertise of LAMEs properly, and the expertise aeronautical engineers properly, and the expertise of airline operators properly...
You need someone who can keep all of the experts under control and focussed on what they are paid to do rather than push barrows in their area of expertise.
Experts in the subject matter being regulated very rarely have the necessary detachment to manage regulatory authorities properly.

Folks,
Could it be that the top job at CASA requires somebody with extensive senior management experience in the public service, and knows their way around Canberra and its denizens, not necessarily subject matter experience.
That is how Chief Commissioner of the ATSB was chosen, and that has worked out pretty well, hasn't it !!!???
Tootle pip!!

agreed with the amsa thing.
the qualifications in aviation are supposed to be evidence of having ones feet on the ground. they are not as such requirements for the job.
that job being to manage the resources so that the players prosper while staying accident free. not to lord it over the players and make their lives miserable.
safety is after all a description applied to a successfully completed activity not an entity in itself. with out the activity there can be no actual safety.
what we absolutely do not want is another Ex-RAAF person who sees themselves as absolutely expert while having not the slightest understanding of civilian aviation. nor for that matter someone out of the aeroclub environment who has nothing but instructing behind them.

if I took on the job I would come with a crate of red pens and a ruler.
for 3 hours every day all you would hear from my office would be
"thats crap delete it"
"scratch that, its rubbish"
"we trust people to act intelligently, delete all that"
"who the fcuk wrote this rubbish, cross all that out"
when I finally ran out of pages it would be...
righto who wrote all the bits I've crossed out? you, you and you eh, well you're all sacked. we do not need fcukwits in aviation and we especially don't need fcukwits in CASA.
