25 years on .. gatherings ?

The calendar approaches 25 years on after a period of significant unpleasantness in the Australian Airline Industry.

While PPRuNe doesn't encourage discussion of such things, might it be possible to use a thread such as this merely, and only, to note any proposed gatherings to mark the passage of time - regardless of which side one might have supported at the time ?

It occurs to me that the people on both sides of the fence at that time don't have a convenient means of disseminating information regarding any gatherings other than via PPRuNe.

Accordingly, might the mods slash and burn ruthlessly in respect of non-pertinent comment - as I fear there will be - but permit dispassionate and factual information regarding gatherings ?

1989 Dispute

What is there to commemorate? It seems to me that most involved would want to forget the whole sorry period of unrest which ultimately served nobody's interest.

In August 2009 there were pleasant gatherings at various watering holes of those who did not defect. The mirth and the bon hommie was memorable. The grinding of axes was not. For they were not in evidence at all . So please do not pass gratuitous judgement.

I think it a good idea for those who can remember and reflect to do so with quiet camaraderie and fellowship. For many of us those are the things that have sustained us these many years. I'll be organising or attending something for sure.

For those who find even the thought of such things anathema....then don't read this Thread, don't attend such gatherings and pleeeeeze......don't get in the way of those who wish to.

For the "get over it" brigade I offer only the reminder that "those who don't learn from history will inevitably learn from history".

Cheers

Algie

The Ford, Holden and Toyota employees effectively priced themselves out of a job. Both sides of the political spectrum have shown they are not interested in Australian jobs.

You don't think it could happen to Australian airline pilots?

You don't think it's happened - in a roundabout way?

As we move closer to August 24, does anyone have any gatherings information to post for the benefit of others ?

Yes, please post details of any gathering in Sydney. I will be pleased to meet those ignorant, self-centred, greedy so-and-sos who pushed and shoved and bullied their way back into GA to claim the crumbs available there from the hungry CPLs. All while insisting that "no one steal their jobs."

Yes, I'll be glad to buy them a beer.

Yes, how terrible of most of these guys to demand more than 70k per year! Let's put everybody on the Bangladesh salary scale shall we?

I'm saving my next round of celebratory drinks for the day that Herr Hawke pegs out

Rubbish, nothing to do with excess pay.

Both sides of the political spectrum have shown they are not interested in Australian jobs.
True, except their own

Old Fella,
No group who went through trauma bother moaning about the bad bits that happened to them; they remember all the happy, fun bits when they get together.

All the old soldiers had a wow of a time at their reunions ... came home rotten and full of bonhomie.

I had a friend who spent the war in Changi. He was a bit of a loner and when he came home, dug a little hole, got in and covered himself over.
Most nights when I stayed at his place, twenty five years later, I'd wake to hear him talking to the Jap with the bayoneted rifle on his shoulder and the bamboo pole in his hands, standing at the top of the bed.

Each year his old mates would ring him and try talking him into coming to the 'bamboo and barbed wire' reunion.

No way... didn't want to dredge up old horrors.

He continued his nightly chats with the guard who couldn't get him , "But I can see you there".

Somehow, someone got him to the forty year get together.
He couldn't believe the mood of the booze up; laughter at some of the nasty things that happened and all the, 'Remember when Lofty/ Shorty/ Billy... '

He came home singing his head off and was too noisy for the Jap guard to stand at the head of the bed.
He went to the next and next reunion till Cancer got him.

The guard appeared occasionally but he got told to 'Buggerr off!'

Have you noticed that no venues have been mentioned so far.
Oh there's plenty of get togethers organised by those who hold each other in great respect.
We talk to each other and if we didn't get an email, we'd ring a mate and ask what's happening this year.

Like the old fellas before us we have a ball catching up on blokes we haven't seen in years and are entertained at the adventures he's had.
WE all come home happy and so do our wives/partners who catch up with the mates they made twenty five years ago.

Sorry, the old fellas you refer to went to war, risked their lives and were treated brutally by a foreign power. The players of TY did none of those things. Have your reunions but please don't consider it as being on the same level as ANZAC Day.

Oh for heavens sake Lookleft, sixtiesrelic is just saying no matter how bad things were at the time the camaraderie from a shared experience shines through. If we can't learn something from his mate's experiences what's the point?

Spare a thought for the collateral damage to others who were caught in the crossfire of a few overpaid self centred individuals...

Gee those who were still in nappies during 89 are awful quick to point fingers and name call aren't they?

I wish it was as simple as that fellas but the truth is that it wasn't.

If a better outcome was had in 89 then rest assured the Airline industry in Australia would be a much better place today and I'd venture to suggest Ansett Airlines would still exist.

Now as Tailwheel says....

Play nice ( oh and respect your elders wouldn't hurt either )

Went to one recently and there was no wailing or gnashing of teeth. Just catching up and enjoying the wine and food.

And no, we weren't comparing ourselves with ANZACs (roll eyes).

At the time I was just about to start my first full time flying job, doing bank runs and night freight in 402`s but needed a bit of extra checking out.

A `resignee`FO from Ansett took my place. I was mad as hell at the time, let my AFAP membership lapse, but I got over it. I eventually found a flying job elsewhere.

`Bad things happen in life. You get over it and move on. You forgive those who did bad things to you because if you start hating and continue to hate, your hate will eventually consume and destroy you.`

The above paragraph is not mine. It came from my Grand Uncle Vin, a deeply Religious man (Lutheran) who was captured at the fall of Singapore, went through the horror of the Burma Railway and survived, but after the war, forgave his captors.

If he could do that after what he suffered........

He lived to a grand old age, and I miss his wise counsel!

I posted only because I don't have routine contact with my pre-89 colleagues .. working in the Melbourne area at the moment so would appreciate a PM from any with information as to get togethers organised so that I might be able to catch up with a few before we all shuffle off the mortal coil ...

Would really appreciate those with different or antipathetic agendas not posting here ...
