AD FAA 2013-02075 Most Piper PA series Aircraft
According to the FAA AD
http://www.casa.gov.au/scripts/nc.dl...2013-02-13.pdf
By March 2014 all aircraft applicable (some 34,000) should have been inspected at approx $600 each or 14.5M to the industry.
My Question is
has the Australian industry started work on all these inspections.
What are the outcomes, e.g. if pitting and corrosion is found then rectification work carried out to replace the rear stab cables.
My LAME said yesterday if we take all the panels out to inspect and replace it may as well do the whole cable system as it is old also?
Estimated cost $1400 for parts and $3500 for labour
That is for my old 1969 PA28 about 20% of the value of the airplane.
Reason for AD according to FAA there have been control surface failures in the USA.
It was an SB now its an AD...
Has anyone got any advice
has anyone found any defects in Australia?
Are any planes flying AFTER the inspection using the technique descibed of scotchbrite and alcohol to clean up the turnbuckles
And good for the next 2000 hours.
Doesnt sound all that critical..and yet 2 crashes and several events reported in USA.
What do people think of the chances of a crack propagating unseen from the inside?
The photos and xrays I have seen pretty convincing.
if it is so serious why was it not MANDATED in March 2013?
Why were we not as owners notified asap??

If the work is done as part of the annual/100 hour inspection the cost shouldn't be great.
My plane just went in for a 100 hourly inspection and the LAME pressed to replace the control cables, so I guess they are on the look out for this area. Maybe the recent Beechcraft reports of corroded control cables were the catalyst for this interest.
I got quoted $200 for new cables, so it's not a big deal.
I find it's a good idea to follow the LAME's suggestions, and the cost if not great anyway,

$200 for new cables
I just paid around $240 each for elevator, trim, rudder & aileron cables for a non-certified experimental aircraft so $1,400 is about right for a push-pull cable if that's what you're talking about there ZAZ given that it's certified and imported. It's the labour component that's killing you there.
My 1974 Piper Cherokee Cruiser had the cable AD done back in March during the periodic inspection when the AD had only been current for a few days.
Turnbuckles/barrels were both stamped 1973 and we decided to toss them rather than bother cleaning them up as I was quoted only $20 each for new ones.
Quote from Invoice 21/3/2013: FNQ Cables - Manufacture Stabilator Cables P/N: FNQ62701-10, FNQ62701-11, FNQ62701-12, FNQ62701-13 IA6053 - Cost $718.69 + GST. So more like $200 per cable, not $200 for the lot!
ADDITIONAL WORK CARRIED OUT: Stab control system inspected. Stabilator control cables and turnbarrels unserviceable. New cables and turnbarrels fitted to aircraft. Duplicate inspection of elevator control cables carried out. Fuel line grommet replaced with new item at RH feed through under cabin floor. Surface corrosion found on inside skin of fuselage tail section. Corrosion treated with LPS Procyon. Cost $1080.00 + GST
So all up about $2000 on top of the Annual including treating the corrosion found inside the tail section with everything stripped out. No freight charges on the cables as FNQ Cables is an in-house company with Ian Aviation at Archerfield who did all the work.

Over the last 2 - 3 annuals we've been progressively replacing cables. I would have said it increased the cost of each of the annuals by less than $500. I don't see it as a big deal. Cables are a consumable item and should be replaced on some sort of a timeline.
The service letters have been around for a while now, subscribe to them online its free ....

Thanks everyone
Food for thought and always get a second opinion IMO
So i did
I contacted PIPER tech type who had done 7 planes and one replacement.
An extensive PIPER user had done 25 inspections and nil u/s.
I have just bought a STABILATOR Kit of cables for $450.00 the 8130- release not and will find a willing and able LAME who will replace them.
I was quoted by my current LAME ALL CABLES 35 hours plus $1400 for the kit total $5000
BUYER BEWARE..
I checked the log book and find I am now flying on the suspect cables and no mention in the log book and a fresh MR.
So plane can stay on the ground until I get cables done.
But then today in the mail came the new CD telling me better have a closer look.
So when we do the STABILATOR cables,
IFF the others show signs of wear or corrosion then will plan to replace them also.
