I think you are right about the type. Vh-usu was flat across the ruder top where as this one is curved. The picture on Essendon Airport's history timeline shows a similar type nosed into the hangar that is closest to the photographer. It is dated 1936. It has a white tail but CR#1's pic has a dark tail.

Ok. Not that old but used to work there.
The road behind the hangars is Bulla Rd, before the drome expanded and cut it, as funnily enough Tulla did many years later.
I believe the lefthand hangar is where hangar 8 is now and the tower is where the buildings on the left side in the picture are.
That pic has been around for a while.

If that is a Staggerwing (hard to tell at that resolution) in the hangar at the right edge of the photo, then it dates the photo to 1936 or later.
(First 2 staggerwings, a C-17B and a C-17L were imported in 1936)

Interesting. The prop doesn't look like a current day image of a staggering prop based on curvature. However, if you imagine the the prop plane and parallel that to the leading edge of the lower wing it does seem to be advanced compared to the upper wing.
VH-UYI C/n 129 , c17B was first registered in June 1937 but crashed at Brisbane on the 21 st May 1941 according to a book I have.
VH-uxp c/n 108 c17b first registered in 1937 , operated with the RAAF as A39-3 during the war, returned to the civil register 1952.
No other stagger wings mentioned in the time frame of '30's

From the links above, the white highlight contrasts the registration so you are close I reckon.
UMH was up in Sydney By '33 and UMG was knocking around in '31 with the black rego on the white background but the next year the colour contrast had changed so between UMG & UMH it is possible the image was taken '31 or '32 or a bit of '33 depending when UMH went to Sydney.
I find it interesting so many people are crowding around that particular aircraft. It's like it was an important arrival. Far too many people for 10 pax.

Yesterday was a sensational day for committing aviation. So much so that I did it first thing in the morning by myself just going for a burn around Williamtown and second one the hour before sunset taking my two kids up on two flights and giving them their first aerobatic flights.
I have to thank my mate who owns the aircraft, he is very very generous with allowing me to use it and thus giving me the opportunity for take the girls up for their first aerobatic flight. Outstanding mate, brilliant day and the perfect aircraft for it.
The photos below are taken from one of the instructors in an Archer. We had finished in the training area and he asked me if I wanted some photos so I came up beside him for the photos. The photos through the Archers perspex aren't the greatest but you get the idea. The last one is him flying down Stockton at 500ft following me, but I was doing 160kts so you can't see me in the photo.
All in all a fantastic day for aviating and is one of the reasons we fly.

In the historical Essendon photo it is VH-UMH the tri-engine aircraft. The aircraft top left is VH-ULB and to the right is VH-UGY a Travelair 2000. So do we think it is 1932?
Possibly 1930/31 as ANA operated during this period.
The crowd around VH-UMH might have been greeting or farewellling the passengers. There are photos elsewhere on the web showing passengers boarding at Essendon with a reasonable crowd of onlookers.

I noticed the photo from CR NO is in the State Library of Victoria . Maybe ask Sir Raymond W Garrett when he took the pic :-)

Probably not the prettiest aircraft in the catalogue, but I love these AT's.
