Diddly,
Obviously you are way too young, never seen the movie or have ever watched television. Maybe your "Radar" is not working!

"MASH" era (Korean War) helicopters were 47D/H13's, whereas thats a pic of a Bell 47G with MASH painted on the side.

It's a bit like going down to your local Jeep dealer, buying a second hand jeep and painting WILLYS on the side of it and suggesting that it is a WW2 Jeep.

The untrained eye wouldn't notice.

Down where I once lived South East of Melbourne by some 2.5 hours, there's one sitting static in someone's front yard. Apparently the genuine article. Long since unairworthy. I'll bet there are many more out there like it.

I believe it's currently being operated by Helicopter Flight Training at Ardmore along with the recently imported ex-Austrian Air Force Bell 206. I don't know whether they own it outright, or if it's a syndicate, or some other arrangement.

For flying training or private use as I imagine the 206 would not have a Civillian C of A?

The MASH helicopters had a fuel tank that extended across the frame behind the mast.

As an aside. I've seen this opening scene a thousand times and always wondered if this scene of two machines in formation, flying down the valley was genuine Korea footage?

Certainly the very first and last scene featuring the shows cast obviously isn't, but this pic shows either a very convincing dummy or a human being in the litters. Either those people are injured or really really calm actors.

As a further aside. For me the best part of the show was seeing Kathy Denny Fradella every night. Who? She's the lead brunette nurse running full tilt to the helipad. I think it was at that point, I knew I wanted to either be a pilot - or get shot.

Edit: This scene is from the movie intro, but I believe it's part of the same footage used for the TV show.

The ex-Austrian 206s are not OH58 Kiowas and indeed B206s, or more precisely AB206s made under licence by Augusta. They have full Bell 206 type certificate and can be registered for full comercial use. Unlike the OH58 which can only be operated in restricted category.

Opening scene was shot just south of San Clemente. About halfway between LA and San Diego and right beside interstate 5. Have a few pics (somewhere).

AC glad I could help. As she was the only nurse from the opening scene to not reapear in the show, her details were lost by the studio. It seems that until the US media managed to track her down, she had no idea that her 3 seconds of fame had caused such a large male interest from all over the world.

For those without a clue of whom we speak, this is her.

CF, thanks for the response. I can't think of a dollar figure that would have me strapped to the outside of one of these machines just for a studio - and no credits.

In another life I spent some quality time guarding a Army stores depot that had several Sioux (Bell 47) helos sitting in storage, complete and sealed in humidity controlled / vacuum packaging. To my knowledge they are still there, as are a number of B206 Kiowas and a sh1tload of crated weaponry dating from Vietnam - even some water-cooled Vickers machineguns.

Would love to see those photos!

The TV show was filmed in Malibu Creek State Park, about 100 miles up the road northwest of LA.
