Alternates
Hi Everyone,
When deciding upon a suitable alternate, is it possible to plan for an alternate which has holding (ie. INTER/TEMPO) provided it is above the alternate minima or must the alternate have no deteriations forecast regardless of whether it is above or below the alternate minima?
Also I have heard some sources that airlines have different requirements regarding the onset of INTER/TEMPO's when the a/c is enroute to the destination. Are some are required to divert to carry the holding fuel if not on board, while some believe that it is only a planning requirement and therefore it does not apply. Does this again revolve around whether the deteriation is above or below the alternate minima?
If anyone could please shed some light on the correct action for the above situations it would be much appreciated.
Thanks B.E.

Assume you are referring to Australian ops?
The very start of the Jepp ATC section on alternate aerodromes starts along the lines of "A PIC must make provision for flight to an alternate, when required..." There is nowhere I can find to suggest this is a planning requirement only.
If the PIC becomes aware of a new alternate/holding requirement enroute then this must be considered.
The fuel policy of my employer is that if you cannot make that provision for an alternate or any weather holding required and you are not past a PNR for somewhere else suitable then you are obliged to divert.
There is also another alternate thread on this forum. Read that too.
