Solidfx8 chart reader..good or bad?

Im sick of endless endless jep updates.

Not to mention that I now have a stack of 30 sets of jepp books on my desk that are up to 10 revisions out of date. Guess who is the poor bunny that has to salvage the lot...............Me.

I was thinking of making a proposal to replace all our jep sets with the Solid FX8. Including my own.......which are up to date.


Also, in my salvage efforts, I rang jep and they emailed me the current listing of charts current to the latest revision.

Why cant they just have it on their website so I dont have to bother them?

I believe Jeppesen will have an iPad App by the end of the year.

I've been told by Jeppesen Australia, just this week, that I can't use Jeppview or data derived therefrom on the flight deck UNLESS I OWN THE AIRCRAFT!

can you please clarify your comment

I've been told by Jeppesen Australia, just this week, that I can't use Jeppview or data derived therefrom on the flight deck UNLESS I OWN THE AIRCRAFT!
The way it currently reads is that you cannot use Jeppview to print out documents and use them in flight. I assume that it only applies to electronic flight bag type apparatus. Can you please confirm??

TinKicker, I'll quote the relevant section for individuals (bolding will be mine) from a copy of the Jeppview Licence Agreement that I printed this morning.

LICENSED USE AND RESTRICTIONS ON USE. *Licensee may use the Software and Data in accordance with the corresponding license purchased as set forth in either subsection (A), (B) or (C) below. USE OF THE SOFTWARE AND DATA BY AN AIRLINE/AIR CARRIER OR GOVERNMENT OR MILITARY ENTITY UNDER THIS LICENSE AGREEMENT IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. *
*
A.​License for Individual Use. *Licensee may: (i) load the Software and Data on up to four (4) computers provided that the Software and Data (a) are not used in more than one ground-based computer simultaneously, (b) are not used in a ground-based computer and in an aircraft simultaneously, and (c) are not used in more than one aircraft simultaneously; (ii) *physically transfer the Software and Data from one computer to another provided that the Software and Data are installed on no more than four (4) computers at any time; and (iii) print charts from its own licensed copy of the Software for use in the cockpit of one or more aircraft privately owned by Licensee provided that any printed charts are not used concurrently in any aircraft. *Licensee may not print charts for any other use whatsoever, distribute charts to anyone except the pilots of the aircraft for which the Software and Data are currently being used, or copy or reproduce the printed charts for any purpose whatsoever.

well that is abundantly clear.

Makes the 'legal' pool of users of Jeppview in Australia quite small. When my renewal comes up again in about 6 months will be thinking long and hard about renewing it. I'm guessing that the legal eagles in the US of A had a bit to do with the drafting.

Clarrie,

Just a thought, perhaps there is another form of the EULA - a Commercial version? Here is an extract from further within the Jeppview EULA.

"........If the Software and Data under any of the above licenses are being used in Licensee’s flight operations department to support all aircraft for which a license has been purchased, Licensee may (i) use the Software and Data within its flight operations department simultaneously with use on Licensee’s aircraft containing the same or greater subscription coverage, and (ii) print charts from its licensed copy of the Software for use in an aircraft which has subscribed to the same or greater subscription coverage as that being printed....."

The Jeppview is a little oriented toward the private level, and given large airlines have tailored packages of printed charts, perhaps there is a commercial version applicable to types fitted with panel mount EFB(QF A380 for instance), or those airlines which provide crew with EFB.

Having said that, I agree that selling a product wherein the licence agreement prohibits its' primary use is quite preposterous.

Perhaps some questions shouldn't be asked - if we keep quiet, we can use privately owned EFB, as it could be claimed PDF version of a chart may have been derived from a paper version privately held by the pilot.

Also, there is not much chance that, should you have an incident/accident, the origin of your operational documentation, if current, will be called into question. Besides the flames will have consumed the evidence

If the iPad version is on it's way, let it happen, then we can ask the questions about commercial use - they will miss a big market if they prohibit use by Airline crew.
