A question for those who have gone through the process..
My application changed to "application under review" a few weeks ago and has been sitting "under review" since - is that the step before the "round filing cabinet" or a good sign?

Not being a doom-sayer, but mine has been like that since...

So is what Iam hearing correct about VARA now being on the Seniority list but they will only allow a small percentage of their pilots to transfer to mainline per year ?
What Date of Joining did they get ?

Nothing I'd say. It looks to me that the interview process was a contingency plan if the VARA deal didn't go through. Now that it has they'll source crew from within and those of us waiting for a start date will possibly be offered ATR positions or more likely, nothing.

There is supposed to be more recruitment into VANZ this year, I doubt they will come from VARA. So if little or none from VAI 777, then those who interviewed might be in luck. Good fun, isn't it?
As a side note, anyone who is thinking of joining now should seriously think about the implications of being junior to all VARA pilots on the seniority list. If you join into VANZ or 777 SO, you will realistically flush any promotional opportunities down the toilet for good.

I've given up with this lot. 3 times now we've been promised 'we'll let you know by XX dates', only for those dates to come and go and nothing in the way of correspondence. I know why there has been a delay from sources inside, a simple email could have explained everything.
Instead, silence.
As an aside, surely you don't suggest that if joining as an SO, you'd remain an SO for good. 5-7 years sure, but longer seems unrealistic. What % of VARA even want to sit in the back of a 777 for 5 years?

How does joining VANZ or an SO on the Trippler realistically flush promotional opportunities down the toilet? As I understand it if it's one big list it doesn't matter what part of the business you join that's your place on the list. If you were to join as a domestic jet F/O but someone joined a day before you and went to VANZ or as an S/O or an F/O on the ATR guess what, they have seniority over you so it doesn't matter where you join. Yes the list is getting bigger but you can't help that. Please turn it down and take one of the many other airline jobs are being offered on a daily basis (that would help some of us) but before we are all too big for our britches, look back and remember doing circuits in your 172 and what you would have done just to be involved in the airline.

The Virgin career path:
Join as an ATR F/O. Once you meet the annual quota after several years, progress onto the 777 complete with pay cut. Spend a huge amount of time there before enjoying the rest of your career as an ejet FO.
Similar progression times to QF without the remuneration, opportunity, variety, vision or hope.
Hell, even McVinish offers better career options

Thats the price for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, which is not todays applicants fault. The time to join Virgin was back in the late 1990s where you would have had a short spell in the right seat and been upgraded quickly when they ramped up after Ansett collapsed.
Joining then would have you in Brisbane by now as a B737 Captain in your early 40s enjoying life. Joining now could easily mean a career in the right seat, unless a retirement bulge comes up which is possible if there was a large number around the same age when they joined in the early 2000s.
Does anyone in Virgin have a idea of retirement numbers in the next ten to fifteen years ?

Even if you joined in the mid 2000's you'd be right. Most are 737 CPT's now that I knew.
Can anyone in VA actually give a half reasonable estimate for time to Command of 737? Typical progress in years and aircraft type?
