there has been no recruitment so to speak of in recent times.
If the company think you will be a good fit, then you are in. Plenty of people in their 50's (a couple in their 60's) here who came back from UK, Asia etc in the last lot of recruitment and are now happily ensconced in the system. Are they captains? Not yet. Will they ever be again? Maybe. Maybe not. But that is not what was important to them when they applied.
No conspiracy. Just looking for the right people. If you miss out, I guarantee it won't be on age.

When I got the go ahead back in 2011, my crash buddy was in his 50's and was a skipper with an overseas carrier.
VA obviously had no problem with him and he slotted into the system with no dramas at all.
Shouldn't be a problem.

So it appears there is a bit of movement in VARA at the moment!
I hear that time to command on the F50 is now probably less then 12months and about 12-18months to bid onto the F100 as an FO.
Not sure about ATR, does anyone have more info on where the ATR progression is at?

So, I had forgotten that I had applied for a 'F50 Perth position"
The other day I received an email requesting a full history of theory exams. (Which costs $65)
Is this a standard request I wonder?

Yeah I have a mate who has one in 2 weeks too....I'm confused though as the advertisement is titled for NZ FO on 73 and VAI 777 SO, yet when you go through the application process there is an option for domestic FO too?

Bazza....
We've had several current VAI 777 SO's and other applicants with interviews confirmed with VAI also apparently looking at their options here in Asia. This is what I've been told re the VAI SO role.
Pay is $79K (inclusive of Super) plus allowances. These vary depending if you're flying to the sand pit or LA and also the amount of trips you do.
Typically you will do 3-5 trips per 56 day roster. In between you will be rostered for training and training/checks in the sweat box (every 3 months) I believe.
As far as progression...you will be in the back seat for 3 years minimum but realistically for 5 years depending on movement. Also be aware that VARA (Regional ATR) guys will be integrating shortly and that they will be joining the seniority list as of Jan 2014 so you will be joining behind them. Any opportunities to move from SO will be based on 'seniority' so I guess you will be behind any other SO's who joined before you, and also the VANZ 737 guys and now also the 150 or so VARA guys...
Hopefully this helps, and even better maybe someone else also in the know can elaborate on this.
All the best, cheers!

How have those that have completed the new recruitment process found it?

Has anyone been called up for interviews lately after the 31st May cut off date for applications?
And does anyone know what type of psychometric tests are used now? Is it the same SHL ones that the Qantas group uses?

Does VAI still operate the wet lease for Etihad flying AUH-KUL return before coming back to Sydney? If so, how many days away from home is it, when that happens?

Actually it does BPA, because of the aircraft operating AUH-KUL-AUH, the SOs remain in AUH for the return, so it ends up being 4 nights in AUH for them which is a 6 day trip. Occasionally when there is training going on it is not uncommon to see a 6 night AUH.
As for interviews, saw quite a few candidates in BNE yesterday. Good luck to all!
