Fanwing
Check this out!
Just like the fan in your car aircon or aircon at home.....
UAV designs seem to be the go for radical departure from the status quo!

That is pretty darn cool.
I wonder if we will ever see an Airliner with rollers down the wings. They may be pretty efficient at altitude with less drag from the thinner air coupled with gears and a turbine running at design rpm........
Still would not be as sexy as a couple of pods slung under a wing or strapped to a tail

Noise?
Possibly not a lot, ask yourself how quiet your airconditioner in your bedroom is, and consider most o fthe noise is not actually from the fan itself, its other things, motors, air past other fixed objects in the unit.
Very clever design..........now why did Jaba not think of it!

Clever idea and looks neat, but I wonder if it would scale up enough to be really useful.
TGGoblin mentioned a liner, but could it actually go that big ? I'm thinking in terms of weight of the fan + motor, supporting structure, inertia etc. etc.
Mind you, if a 2-seater came along, I would call that useful...
Any engineers care to comment ?

Do you reckon blokes riding around on horses 200 years ago imagined something bigger than their biggest warship could fly?
Anything is possible with time and money, hell I even learnt how to fly

What glide?
The fan wing concept has been around for a number of years and is virtually a variation of the blown wing.
An interesting concept but in it's present form probably does not have a general commercial application.
The fan wing concept has been around for a number of years and is virtually a variation of the blown wing.
- It "nearly achieves" vertical takeoff and landing. (VTOL)
- FanWing cannot stall and is suited to low speed flight.
- Its already established efficiency in lift and thrust makes FanWing highly space and fuel economical.
- The FanWing is simple and requires few high-tech materials, and should therefore have low construction and maintenance costs.
- It has limited glide capability and needs power to remain airborne.
