MQD VOR?

I notice there has been a NOTAM out on MQD VOR for a couple of weeks stating it is on test, do not use etc etc etc.

...are they putting it back into service?

...please?

Was Decomm'd about the same time as Mount Sandon, 12-18 months ago.

never mind, we still have WWII vintage NDBs at those locations... I might just ring AirServices and listen to their "on hold" message so I can remind myself just how cutting-edge and modern the Australian air traffic management system is.

To answer my own question: it appears that a Navaid manufacturer is using the site to test some new gear.

No, it won't be re-comissioned.

Bugger.

AirServices still pretty happy with themselves, according to their on-hold musak

How true! Back in 95 we were among the first in the world to approve GPS for primary means nav... all the NDB's and VOR's were to be things of the past within 10 years... What went wrong?

We can't even buy a new aircraft with an ADF any more unyet here ASA are still supporting NDB's as a serious aid and getting rid of VOR's!
