Question Info needed please.

I'm heavily considering going down the road of becoming a pilot. I've read alot of stuff on lack of work out there for pilots. Is this the case in Australia? Is that only if you want to fly jets as well? Really I'm happy flying anything, doing any flying job. All I really want is to work in Australia, preferably Brisbane. But I imagine I can't be too picky. Anyway I haven't started the training yet. I've only just been offered the place at uni. It will take three years to finish my university course at Griffith. Does any one feel like the industry is improving? As in there are more jobs coming along for pilots? Once again I would be very happy to teach, drop sky divers, take aerial shots, whatever. Just as long as I'm flying for a living. I'm probably going to get another qualification on the side to get me by if times get tough. Also can anyone tell me what sort of a wage a pilot gets? As in for the beginners pilots job all the way up to the expert pilots job.

If anyone can give me a link to where I can find this info that would be great too. I kind of feel wierd about going up to a pilot and asking them in person "hey mate how much do you earn?"

Any info on how to suceed or what to expect would be great.

Hey mate,

Briefly? Pursue it if you have you have fundamental passion for flying and Aviation alike. The degree will burden you with a $100k+ HECS debt, I'd look into doing it full-time through a flight training provider instead, degree counts for something, but I wouldn't regard it as that beneficial.

Believe half of the that you read on here, it's can be a rewarding path, remain motivated and focused.

Just my 2c, but I presume that's what your after. PM me on Brisbane training in particular.

Best wishes

Congrats on starting what i believe to be a very rewarding career. Now to set some things straight. Firstly you will come across challenging hurdles along the way...for example the opportunity to get your first job in brisbane(unless instructing). Secondly the pay starting out is crap!! I was getting $80 a day for my first serious ga job. As you gain experience however it improves. Airlines pay from about 55k a year to about 350k a year for a380 capt (although these figures are becoming rarer). Pm if you want anymore help i know how hard it can be but honestly, having had another life in another field of work and now working for an airline you will love it!!!

IMO, Dont bother with that degree, go to a flying school that will give you a job at the end of your training, do the trainng full time, and you will be working by the end of the year. In 4 years time when you would be only just be finishing your degree you will prob have well over 1000hrs with debts paid and some.

Thanks everyone.

I found out it was roughly about $50,000 to do my CPL through a flying school. In order to budget does any one know what extra endorsements I'd need to firstly get my first job and then to later move up to a better paying job (i.e.airline)? Also, to do this the flying school way are people expected to have the money up front or do schools have a pay back method? I guess this is why uni seems more appealing (HECS + fee help). Also I may be able to get support while studying from Centrelink if I go through uni. I understand it's a hard road, I just need to find the best plan so that I'm successful in doing it.

Once again I appreciate this help a lot everyone.

A good idea doing it through a flight school. Most good schools understand each individual students financial status and set the method for payment accordingly. There is no need to pay any money up front and you should avoid it.
Also I may be able to get support while studying from Centrelink if I go through uni.
You can still get centrelink support if doing private training through a flight school.

Goodluck with it all.

I suggest doing it through a flight school- if you do your research quite a few are austudy approved. You might want to look into training academies running cadetships where they are more than likely to employ you on completion of your training.

As for the pay... well lets just say i could earn more at Mcdonalds. I think the pay across the board in GA is generally pretty low-If you want bread on the table you'll be best aiming for the airlines. On the upside its a really job so i wishe the best of luck

Casual instructor : Paid only for hours the prop is turning and be expected to sit around all day hoping for new students to appear. Busy day = $150

Casual charter : $0/day - $150/day & can be expected to be on call 24/7 not being paid. Say no to a charter for any reason and expect never to be called again.

Skydiving : 'Pilots dont get paid here' to $5 to $10 a load.

If you can stick it out for a few years you may get put on salary which if your lucky it might be the award. From memory around $35000 ?

When I did my CPL 8 years ago, it took about a year of constant applying everywhere to get a break just to be a casual earning less than the dole.

There was a pilot shortage 2 years ago but the global financial crisis soon put a stop to that.

My advice to you is if you really want to do it, then go for it but be aware after a while the novelty will wear off but the $100k bill wont go away so easily. It can be a very very long road to get to the airlines and the reality is only 1 in 10 pilots ever make it that far.

If you never make it to the airlines, Ag flying and low level survey can pay alright but it is danger money and your never home.

All that aside don't let me put you off if it is a lifelong dream of yours. I just feel its better not to sugar coat it too much.
