Choose your trainer carefully....
Is the quality of the product between Alteon, AirNZ, Pan Academy and Aeroservices really that different? I would have thought that as a standard A320 type rating, they would have just provided exactly what the OEM recommended (no more and no less)?
I have heard rumours from third parties within JQ that a number of pilots who saved money with the foregin type rating have failed line checks in Oz and NZ during 2009. I've got no hard facts, but welcome anyone who has the real story on whether it really was the quality of the training.....

For the A320
Ansett is $34500 aus
Air NZ is similar
Overseas rating plan on about $20k usd
Big problem doing them over seas if getting CASA to put the rating on your licence! Doing the rating in a ICAO country seems to be a heap easier. Also check Casa recognises the Sim that you are doing the training on. Some sims in the US CASA wont accept the time on.

GS2008, yes there can be a big difference. A lot depends on the availability of fixed base trainers, computer based programs (for operation, not just tech) and other stuff. None of this may be "required" but if it is available, it will allow completion of the type rating with better than "minimum" standard.
The right training organisation will be more than just a sausage factory doing the minimum required. Airline organisations are good as they train people to their standards (as opposed to minimum standard) and are operationally experienced with the aircraft. I'm not saying specialist training organisations are bad, but a lot of the time, you get what you pay for. If you want a job flying that aircraft type, the extra it may cost may be better value in the long run.

A320 Training
The old Ansett Sim centre is huge. The new owners must have spent millions on the new building. On their web site Ansett Aviation Training claim to be the largest simulator training centre in the Southern Hemesphere. I think there are about 11 or 12 full flight simulators in the buildings. A mate of mine just completed an A320 course at Ansett and paid $28000 for the course. He said the standard of the course was first rate and that all the instructors were A320 pilots either having flown with JetStar or Tiger. He got a job with Tiger straight after he completed the course.

There is Oxford at Hong Kong. They recently moved to Dragon House from CX City.
I am sure that they would have the CBT and other trainers (FMGC/ ECAM) that we had upstairs. All useful.
PM saducees if you would like me to find out more.

I'm still looking for a sim partner for an A320 command type rating scheduled for February 5th 2010, in Kuala Lumpur with CAE. $19500 USD. I'll be adding it to my Australian ATPL...any takers ?

Apologies for digging up this previous thread. I am specifically referring to an initial A320 TR endorsement training provided by Ansett: Ansett Aviation Training I am looking at CAO 40.1.0 but would like some guidance on the following:
1. Is it a class rating (not type reting) under Appendix 1A ? Assuming it is,
2. Is it a co-pilot endorsement as opposed to a command endorsement ? Is it necessary to fly the real aeroplane in endorsement training or its final issue (this impacts on cost) ? To answer this question, should I be looking at section 7.2.3 (App 1A Part 5 command endorsement) or section 7.3 (App 1A Part 6 co-pilot endorsement) ? Does it make a difference ?
Many thanks in advance.

I did this 4 course at the Ansett Sim center last year. A320 type endo, CMD rating.
You fly the Sim from the R/H seat & then do a rejected T/off from the L/H seat to qual for the CMD endo. The Frogs designed the 'bus' to be flown from either seat, fully controlled whether airborne or on the ground. IE steering tiller both sides. Great instructors, 3 guys all got me thru in the min time.
Hard work as in you gotta put in a lot yourself as there is a high element of self taught (study wise).
good luck

Go Air NZ all the way, the Alteon product is passable but just the bare bones. Air NZ endorsed pilots that I have flown with seem to have had a really high quality course for a similar price.

Just soliciting interest from potential partners for the Ansett A320 TR at ML. The length of the course is about a month. The cost in post #7 is based on 2 pilots sharing.
Serious offers only please. PM me if you prefer.
