Hey guys, i am a student doing year 12 right now and am very much interested to become a pilot. I am just wondering what is the best way to go about becoming a pilot?
Do u think that REX is the right choice?
After you complete the course and get a job within the REX group, how much do you get paid a year?
And what if the student takes longer than 8 months to complete the course, what happens then?
Thanks guys,
Fazza

Morpheus: She told you exactly what you needed to hear, that's all. Neo, sooner or later you're going to realise, just as I did, there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.

What is?
I know why you're here, Fazza.
I know what you've been doing... why you hardly sleep, why you live alone, and why night after night, you sit by your computer. You're looking for him. I know because I was once looking for the same thing. And when he found me, he told me I wasn't really looking for him. I was looking for an answer.
It's the question that drives us, Fazza. It's the question that brought you here.
You know the question, just as I did.

You know the question, just as I did.
Morpheus: The Rex Cadet Scheme is a system, Fazza. That system is our enemy. But when you're inside, you look around, what do you see? Captains, Cabin Crew, LAMEs, Bert Snorkel. The very minds of the people we are trying to save. But until we do, these people are still a part of that system; and that makes them our enemy. You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.
Were you listening to me, Fazza, or were you looking at the Saab with the red X?
Fazza: I was...
Morpheus: Look again. [the Saab with the red X is now a Saab 340 off the side of YMTG runway] Freeze it.
PS Hey Mods, I'm not going to drag out this Matrix schtick but I just have to say that this thread definately needs some Matrix background music.

Morpheus: Do you believe in pay your own way cadet schemes, Fazza?
Fazza: No.
Morpheus: Why not?
Fazza: Because I don't like the idea that I'm not in control of my life.
Morpheus: I know *exactly* what you mean. Let me tell you why you're here at PPrune. You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with aviation. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to PPrune. Do you know what I'm talking about?
Fazza: The Rex Cadet Program?
Fazza: No.

Are you still working in aviation? If so, you chose the red pill.
(And sadly no, not in aviation at the moment... Ironically enough because of the $$$ or lack there of . Hopefully returning soon though!)

But why is Bert Snorkel really there?.................................
He's not silly enough to participate in the Cadet Scheme
One just has to look at his past mmmmmmmmm

That being said, Rex appears to be a much tougher nut to crack, and it will take something fairly drastic to change their position. Like when they have to start trimming their schedules (again) because of a serious lack of experienced Line and C&T Captain's, very few upgradable F/O's and an oversupply of low-time F/O's; who, without either leaving Rex to build their command time (and paying out their exorbitant 'training costs' in the process) OR ICUS being approved won't be able to upgrade for a very, very long time. Until the deal is inked with CASA for ICUS (another big IF) those cadet's who signed up already have taken a very big gamble with their future.
From what I have gathered as an outsider (and I could be wrong) this is exactly where Rex are headed at the moment.
For those who argue that accepting the conditions Rex have on offer is hurting everyone - they have a valid point. BUT, when a person is faced with a choice between being unemployed OR having a job and building towards a better role and having some kind of income, it isn't necessarily bad (I'm talking DEC's and F/O's here, not the Cadets).
Those people who agree to pay to build RPT jet time (like the schemes in Europe) or "will work free to build hours" have no excuse.
I recently returned to my previous career because I could no longer afford to live on aviation industry wages - and not just for Tech Crew (I was ground crew, as well as working towards my PPL and eventually CPL/ATPL - the traditional way). I stayed in 12 months longer than I should have and am paying an incredibly high financial price for that decision now. But I did what little bit I could to improve the conditions while I was there. A lot of people in our industry simply do not have that opportunity.
Interesting observations heffy_inc.
The REX Cadets have simply chosen to take a path that will at the very least give them a significant start in the industry. If I were in their position 25 years ago, I would have done the same thing. REX management know this, and as such will always have enough applicants for a program that promises a job at the end, provided you make the grade of course.
Previously when a pilot finally "made it" even to a regional job, the wide eyed expectations of youth were somewhat tempered by the experiences they had already gone through. Many cadets don't have this "advantage", and as such the reality may bite a little harder for some of them. The notion of having to sit in the RHS for 4-5-6 or more years after graduation is ceratinly no different to what their counterparts in years gone by had to expect, and that's after up to a decade in GA!
So what's the problem? Expectations, that's what! Most Cadets (excepting the silvers spooners) are beginning to realise the coveted job of "airline pilot" does not provide financial security. Most graduates of a "professional" technical course (especially one that requires the outlay of $80K) would normally expect at least the national average wage to start. DOUGH!
Eventually Cadets will make it into the LHS. Their wages will increase, perhaps not enough to offset the massive debt some may now find themselves in, but it certainly won't happen anytime soon. And there's the problem for REX. The death of GA has been fuelled in part by the overall reduction in the terms and conditions of professional pilots. Airline management have failed to take responsibility for their role in this, and despite whatever deal they can do with the regulator, it will continue to bite them in the arse for years to come.
As for Cadets being the way of the future? If what's left of GA continues to decline, then that may be the case. The challenge for management will then be attracting the "quality" of candidate. You see boys, you're only delaying the inevitable!

The problem is not limited to REX, unfortunately. This article
