Cairns 430pm - What the hell was that?
BIG four jet engine freighter departed YBCS 15 min ago, easily the loudest aircraft I've heard take off from here. I rushed to the window to see what it was but I havn't seen one before and I didnt see what was on the tail... just that it had 4 jets. It was massive, loud and smokey (and awesome). Anyone in cairns see it?

Antonov of some description
It was an Antonov of some description. More knowledgeable pruners may be able to tell you the model. Some Antonov's have 6 engines.

Crewed by Russian female weightlifters, as they alone have the quadriceps required for rudder inputs in the event of the loss of one or more of the outboard engines.

The white one with blue writing/stripes? AN124 (vodka burner)
Would have been on its way to Rocky to pick up the Singapore Airforces toys after their training stint over the last month or so. (f16s, chinooks..)
I saw the 124 there when they were dropping the gear off... and noticed the other day the blades are off the chinooks, ready for transportation again.

Yes, the AN124 was still sitting on the tarmac at Rocky when I went home at 6pm last night. It has done 2 trips at the start and now 2 trips at the end of the Singapore games. One trip takes 2 chooks and the other 4 Apache & 1 Super Puma choppers. (the other Super Pumas stay at Oakey)
Talking to the refueler they uplift about 120,000 litres for a trip to S'pore.
The F-16s have been providing regular noise for us (twice a day most days). An afterburner twilight takeoff is most impressive to watch.
