Amberly Airshow

Wow! all those that were there today would know how good it was. The FA-18's in formation was excellent, with as usual a great show from the pig. Though for me it was the MaxxG Pitts s1, Pip Bormans edge and Matt Halls Giles g202 which really did it for me. Will try and post up some pics at some stage. FOr those that didn't g today your going to miss out if you don't go tomorrow.

Amberley

Sad that the RAAF C-17 went tech before it was due to give its display so was unable to fly. The commentary team saying 'Ah well - but tomorrow will be twice as good as we'll have that one fixed plus a USAF one flying' didn't console me at all but that'll be nice for those going Sunday!

Something horribly wrong with the traffic plan on Saturday morning - almost 2 1/2 hours from Brisbane to Amberley was a bit slower than I was hoping for!

Whilst having a mini-whinge, the promised Caribou was a no show (seen 'em plenty of times before but still love their demo).

Wouldn't it have been great if the USAF could have been persuaded to give us a show with the two F-15s that were in the static park as well - and, whilst wishing, the RSAF F-16 and Puma looked great on the ground but would have looked even better in the air! And, oh how I wish the static Connie could have been allowed to fly for us!

Our view of the second F-111 demos was temporarily interrupted (for some areas of the crowd - including mine!) when a decent sized vortex it created during a manouevre touched down and covered us all with copious fast swirling dust and assorted debris for a short while - my camera lens was nicely coated in fine powdered dust.

Good show though and worth the bargain entrance fee ($15 ad/$5 child) - maybe the train/bus deal would have been better for getting there though. Did anyone try it?

Saw it on the news tonite MCKES.
I am absolutely devastated that i could not be there. The weather was perfect, the flying displays were 10 out of 10. The sad thing is that this was the last time anyone will ever see the famous "dump and burn" of the pigs.
End of another era of military displays.

Farewell the mighty F-111's. We will miss you...

Thanks for the airshow, but next time get rid of Knox from the commentary booth and play some decent music. Everyone I spoke to mentioned how bad the music was. Obviously the airshow was a recruitment drive for the ADF, how about playing some heart pumping, exciting music? Avalon's airshow was well ahead in the entertainment department.

That's my cry over - I enjoyed the rest

Panop, Went by the train/bus - biggest mistake ever, 3 hours each way, We as well as most others thought that the transport was free because it was at the last one, not the case when everyone got off at Ipswich, with the police saying you must have a return ticket - not an airshow ticket to get on the bus Your right about the f-16 and the f-15's that would have been one great show by the yanks, and a good opportunity for the singaporean guys. The C-17 and the caribou was a bit of a let down but I guess its just tough.

Did anyone fly in?

That used to be the go for those with the means to do it - an easy 10-15 min jaunt from YBAF.

I recall (from times gone by) a continuous stream of lighties from Archerfield to Amberley in the hours leading up to the show and again at the conclusion. After the show, while others battled traffic on the ground, we would be enjoying the first of several coldies in the RQAC bar.

Flying in was not without the occassional frustration however. I recall the following exchange one year, after a big deal was made of the fact that lighties would be cleared to depart in the order of their arrival - and it didnt happen.

XXX: Amberley Tower, I thought it was first in, first out !!!!
Amberley Tower: Bite ya bum!

Dr

PS: I think that is RAAFspeak that only those highly trained airforce jocks understand!

There didn't seem to be as many lighties as I'd expect. Well done to Kellie in the tower for looking after them in her friendly and professional manner, all while dealing with the usual non-standard radio calls that come with such a fly-in.

The clearance handling was a little unusual though. Tower seemed to be handling most of the clearance delivery including transponder code allocation at the same time as a take-off clearance. There were a few occassions when transponder code changes were issued just after take-off. Surely the 'normal' system of clearance delivery -> ground -> tower -> approach would have worked better?

I was wanting to fly in but got lazy and it was upon us before I knew it, so I checked and the slots were all taken. I went the train bus option and found it good, especially on the way home.

I did the train/bus option and it worked well. Only a short wait for bus at Ipswich Station and walked straight onto a bus at the end after checking out a few static displays at end of show.

Great show, with FA/18, F111 and Roulettes the highlight.

Thanks drunkensailor for the pics, I couldn't make it to the airshow as the RAAF only had 30 slots per day for flyins and I dipped out...I have flown into Amberley in previous years with more traffic and didn't seem too much of a hassle so 30 slots per day seemed to me a bit whimpish on their part...having to drive a couple of hours before getting caught up in gridlocked traffic (no trains from where I was coming from) didn't enthuse me too much either so....

Fantastic to see a CAC Mustang, Meteor, Vampire & Hornet in a fly past.

Great to hear the 'Blue note' from the Meteor.

Fantastic to see the Hudson, Canberra, F-111 Fly past.

Pip was magnificaent as usual, as was Matt Hal in the Giles, and Paul Bennett in the Pitts. Lovely little Moth Minor on the North side of Apron, I'm pretty sure this was the first RAAF aircraft ever on the base. (Maybe not this particular one though)

Walk through the C-17 was worth it, but we got there early, I don;t think it would have ben worth it later in the day.

A couple of A582 Drifters on static display, a wonderful flying 'Stick & Rudder' thet are.........

Friggin hot & dusty though, but that's Ipswich for ya!

Emotional final amberley air show for the Pig, legendary aircraft!

Traffic was also a Pig unfortunately....

2004 was perhaps slighlty better as it was not advertised, and so not nearly as busy as it was Sat.

Missing the C17 performance was a shame as alreasdy mentioned, hope to see its performance on the news tonight.

Well done again RAAF Amberley, as always most appreciated!

(Yatala Pie for dinner, of course!, Is there a better meat pie anywhere in SEQ?)

10/10 for the airshow. 1/10 for the planning and logistics for the arrival of 50000+ people on Saturday.
A 3 hour communte from Brisbane followed by a 45 min line up for the 4 person ticket booth at the southern end. Not good.

A Fantastic day out, loved the four ship hornets they looked awesome, a perfect recruiting tool
I found the train/bus trip fine, Although QR could have put more trains on for the peak times, thats my only issue.

Look forward to the next one

I'd like to acknowledge that I only had to deal with two nutbags all day... that's quite an achievement based on previous experience

You can see them coming a mile off. I managed to dodge nearly all of them... apart from 2.

Let's just say that an Amberley Air Show is always going to draw out the Carlo ethusiasts!

Also, I was informed that it's incorrect to refer to the F-111 as "The Pig"

At any rate, it was a top quality day out and I was really impressed by how much fun everybody seemed to be having, despite the heat.

There was a time when I would answer that - but these days I am too identifiable, and I value my clearances too much!
