The important thing really, is that the user is 'happy' with their unit, and can operate it in an intuitive manner, therefore a 'test-drive' is highly recommended.

There's probably not a lot of Garmin in any Garmin!

196 vs 296 vs 495

G'day folks,

I've been asking quite a few pilots which GPS is the best value....

The Garmin 296 has been the most popular hands down, however Garmin have dis-continued their production!! Superseded now by the Garmin 495.

The Garmin 196 is still available, and at less than half the price of the 495, I was wondering if anybody could comment on the Garmin 196?

Is it comparable to the 296??

Thanks in advance..

Not a portable so this is off topic, but Garmin now has a G3000 suite coming out.

Off the cuff I can think of

196 -

- slower updates
- greyscale screen
- no terrain warnings
- less detailed information on screen
- different battery?

Still a good unit however.

I had a Garmin Geko which came free with my BOSE - worked fine, load in waypoints using lat/long from the ersa, it gives your track/groundspeed etc, everything you need basically

Runs off a couple AA's, I got a newer one now (eTrex or something) which also came free when I got a GPS for the car.

296 is awesome though, I'd imagine to 495 is superb as well(pretty much a handheld 430), but it's a lot of coin...

Garmin 60CSx and buy the Garmin TOPO Australia Maps. Can be set to kt / nm / feet or metric. The detail in the mapping software is astounding - even has most bush tracks / creeks on view when you zoom in. If you press "Find" on the handset and scroll down to "Transportation" you'll see most airports / airfields are listed. For those that are not you can create waypoints. It's brilliant for flying & bushwalking.

Agree with NTW............,
I've got the Garmin Oregon 300 with OZTopo maps and software to load me own stuff. It's accuracy is amazing and has everything you need as a backup to charts.

Have a look at the Twonav Aventura. Seems pretty capable. Apparently you can convert just about any map into its format.
