Vale John lindsay
John Lindsay a great bloke and aviator passed away last night.
I am sure there are many many people who John,s advise was passed on to like myself.
It was always a pleasure to have a ale or two with him at the house of lies, at moorabbin airport.
John had not been well for some time and now the best part for him is that that there is no more pain to continue.

It's been an absolute privilege, over the last 16 years, to have worked for, under and with you.
Indeed a true gentleman.
I just wish I could have had that last beer with you mate. Will miss ya!

Thats really sad news, wat a great bloke!
Im lucky i had the privelege of doing my gfpt with him, will never forget 'use more right rudder son!'.

Did my Class One instrument Rating test almost 25 years ago with John Lindsay when he was a CAA examiner. Thorough gentleman and a legend around Moorabbin. Vale John.

Today is a very sad day. When I first met him 25 years ago he was an examiner at YMMB approving licences and I/R renewals. He was gracious to give me my CPL and I/R and a number of renewals. He was by far the most outstanding aviator amongst his peers even if judged solely on his knowledge and character. As the years rolled on he became even more and today for me we have lost not only John the pilot and icon but in our aviation world we have also lost a father. As I head off the LHR, I contemplate, not what I have achieved in my life, but what he allowed me to achieve and what he made me believe that I could achieve. I will miss his cheery smile and humility whilst having a beer with him at RVAC. As I said, a very sad day for aviation at YMMB, Victoria and across Australia.

Yes, John will be missed. He was an icon, the likes of which our industry has not seen for many years.
Back in the good old days (read ‘60’s), I first met with JL when he was the CFI at Pipair at MB before he joined the then DCA as what was called then a Flight Test Officer (FTO). He was one of a fine band of chaps at MB that did the rounds of tests that made up their job. Sadly we don’t see that calibre of aviator these days and the industry is poorer for it. You would find him also at the RVAC passing on his knowledge to the many aviators that would pass by and enjoy a beer with him. He moved on from the Dept of many names, but kept flying in a variety of roles, but always remained the gentleman that we all found him to be. Flicking thru the log book I find my last trip with JL was in June 79 when he did my low level aero approval. The best part was when he asked if he could do a few as well… what do you say? Showed me up somewhat! He retained his enthusiasm for flying and aviators and every time we crossed paths he was the same JL that he was back in the ‘60’s. My wife & I also shared his company to Oshkosh ’98 which he enjoyed immensely.
A top bloke, who will be missed by the many that he has influenced over the years.

He would catch my eye in the bar and say “Well then Mr. Airport Manager, how are YOU traveling today” And in every conversation there would be some small nugget of knowledge I would learn from. I never flew with him – I wish I had- but I respected immensely his knowledge and experience.

J.L.'s passing
We first flew together for a type endorsement in March 1967, when he joined Pipeair. Thorough gent was J.L.. Many subsequent endorsements, and renewals followed, together with many happy flying hours on annual fishing safaris, which were always enjoyed to the fullest. It's so sad-making to say farewell #3607, aviator extrordinaire and my good friend.

A rare gentleman amongst gentlemen ... fond memories of a few very pleasant I/F renewals in years gone by.
I recall one such wherein the situation of OEI with very critically limited performance was postulated .. with nowhere else to go in below minimums conditions .. normal sort of stuff ..
.. there we were ... pedalling on an intercept to the ILS ... the question was along the lines of "what are your intentions .. ?" to which the answer was .. "ILS and land". His response was "what about minimums ?" to which the answer was .. "we'll go to minimums .. assess it as below minimums .. and then land off the ILS".
No more questions for that renewal ... but he left me blind until a lowish height ....

I will always feel privelidged to have flown with you John. You gave me my CPL, my FIR, my CIR and my META.
One of nature's true gentlemen, it was always a learning experience when flying with you.
I will always look back with fond memories whenever I see your name in my logbook. You will be sadly missed.

You will be missed ore than everyone realises John. You have set very high expectations and standards through-out the Industry. We all hope that many more Aviators reach your heights.

My family remembers quite clearly your impact you had on them, and your regular trips to our farm near Swan Hill. My father, who you taught to fly, certainly got up to some wild flying activities, if I can mention that in an innocent way!
You were always up for a Cold One back at the bar after a days work, and always had some sort of cheeky grin going on. Your sharp wits - both on the ground & in the cockpit - were amazing .... especially being able to flick off switches and change turn fuel off without anyone seeing - just to make sure that someone was on the ball!! The funny stories I've heard!!

John Lindsay - an end of an era
John where ever you are, thank you for the compassion and desire to share the knowledge that you acquired from over 20,000hrs of flying.
The comradrie that you genereously share with both my son and I is just one example of the true gentleman that you were....!!! having said all of these nice words - it would be remiss of me to not say that you were a real task master who excepted nothing but " the best"
Fly high John, my flying life is much richer for knowing you.

Very sad news indeed. JL was one of the nicest blokes I have come across, unfortunately I was never lucky enough to fly with him.
I won't be able to make it to your funeral John, RIP mate.

First met him 25+ years ago.Left an impression and created a respect that still exists today. A fine role model that I will always look up to. I can only ever hope to approach his level because in all honesty I know that I will never be his equal. Very few will.

In 2003 I was lucky enough to do my CPL flight test with JL and found his nature made the jittery nerves a lot more at ease. Have spoken to many who have known him over the years and he has made an impression on many and will be missed similarly.
