I don't think gravel runways will be an issue as most of the big mines (ie the ones who utilise jets) have 2-3000m SEALED strips nowadays.

Hawk77, all the runways in QLD currently served by jets are under 1800m and 3/4 of the runways used by jets in WA are also under 1800m. Many have gravel/stones covering the surface.
I too have heard one of flt ops head is ex-EK/PB/VB/Ansett.

Last time I checked, Coondawana was unsealed. BHP are looking at sealing it in the not to distant future.

Ravensthorpe is 1680m.....just long enough for an F100 to operate at full payload (given its not 40 degrees), however the pavement is not strong enough.

Flew into area C yesterday its sealed with an apron that could handle
two jets at a time maybe to handle the predicted 1000 FIFO work force.

I find it hard to beleive that anyone can get an AOC on this nature within 6 Months. Also its all good and well to introduce a new type of aircraft into the mining arena which seems to be what they are after but the operating costs of the jungle jet with a big fat lease charge over Alliance who owns most of their aircraft seems to me that the cost driven market may be happy with the older aircraft which seem to be doing a good job so far.

Cant wait to see what happens.

NJS took only four months to go from contract signing to HiCap AOC for the 717. Wasn't pretty, but it was done.

Why should it not take 6 months or less, if S.A.W. flight ops department is staffed by people that know what they are doing?

NJS were an established Hi cap operator of some 15 years in the Oz industry , slightly different situation to Skyair I would have thought, who are a new start ( ok, with a few familiar faces maybe ) with a first of type in the country.
Also lets not forget NJS had a " little " help from Jetstar who had operated the A/C for years and NJS were not able to do without the support of a certain Jet* checkie for well over 12 months.

I think NJS is a little different to SAW and with CASA moving to Brisbane with all new staff and a new costing system I dont think they will be the most expedient.

Without the support of the likes of QF I think 4 months is a big ask. I hope they have some deep pockets for the new CASA system, they are up for some big bucks now before they even start revenue flying.

Can anyone confirm if they have a contract yet, I see Alliance has purchased F50's and ****** have an ATR42 to chase more mining work, supposedly Olympic Dam but I have not heard anything about anyone signing with SAW?

SAW’s first E-jet has been U/S in Manilla since Friday. The aircraft has rudder problems and requires parts from Embraer to fix it.

I’ve heard they have secured a contract but don’t know who it’s with.
